Re:My old Kentucky MUD
Bah, lost my http...
Tryin it again -
The one true MUD
Lunar eclipse and/orTelnet
While I'm biased as one of the staff. We've been around for a while and have a small but dedicated group that play. Its ROM based, with some fun extra's added in over the years.
Come play, mention slashdot and get a free prize! (if I'm on and in a good mood) -
Re:MUD clients
I have to agree about MUSHclient. It's also supposed to be the fastest client there is for win32. I've used it for years, and I'm quite happy. It's semi-free... unlimited use with the nag screen, but you really should go ahead and pay for it.
While we're talking about MUDs, you all need to check out Adventures Unlimited, the best MUD there is! Tell them Kadagan sent you ;) -
flash mobs
did anyone else see the title of this story and think of a mud?

Re:Important?
Actually, his point is quite true. Not like the video card would help with it, but the less lag you get when mudding, the better. I've been killed by the lag monster WAY too many times. Same thing's happened to me in Diablo online. You'd think my cable modem would fix this, but noooo... I open to door to the butcher's room, things freeze for a second, then I see that I'm dead. MUDding can be just as bad. You're fighting a beastly fido, lag hits, you die. You died to a beastly fido!? Wow, you're pathetic.

Re:Am I the only one?
I thought the exact same thing. That's the whole reason I started to read it, but it bored me fast. Hey, for a REALLY good MUD with a great (albeit small) player base, and kick ass IMMs, check out Adventured Unlimited, or you can just connect. =)

Re:The other audienceBut why pay if the game isn't really worth it?
You hit the nail on the head there. That's why I never pay for my online gaming, and I avoid 99% of the lamers. Try playing a MUD. The vast majority of MUDs are free, including Adventures Unlimited, my MUD of choice. They're at least equally addictive, if not more so, than EverQuest and the like. The only real differences are:
- Price
- Text-based vs. Graphical
- The MUDers usually perfer RP to hack-and-slash (but that varies from MUD to MUD)
To me the choice is clear and simple.
Hey, and if you stop by AU, tell them Kadagan sent you! -
Valhalla and Asgard's HonorI cut my MUDding teeth on Valhalla, starting round about 1990 or so. Here's some more info about Valhalla, since George Reese's timeline isn't available any more at imaginary.com.
Valhalla was an awesome online environment. It beat the hell out of the BBSes of the time, and it kept getting better as more and more areas were added. I got all the rush of EQ from it 10 years before EQ ever happened, and I still get that same rush daily. Valhalla ceased to be in October 1997, but was reincarnated shortly thereafter (under new management) as Asgard's Honor. The admins and lib versions for Asgard have changed a bit from that link up there, but all the gameplay descriptions are still accurate, and a lot of the old Val players migrated to Asgard. I played on Val and now on Asgard as Silence.
Our web page is at ahonor.betterbox.net. We're currently in the process of updating it with all sorts of additional information. If you're looking for an online experience that isn't driven by profit but by having fun; where you can kill monsters, gain spells, chat with old friends and make new ones; and where you can talk directly with the people building the world, by all means stop in! Log in as 'guest', or create a character; either way, we'd love to have you check us out. I'm usually on every day, and I love to help out newbies.

Re:Mech designation
Does anyone remember playing Battletech mud? With Color Ansi text, was the first large scale multiplayer game I played. I dont remember the exact one (Colorado EDU i think), but I found BattleTech 3065 MUX which seems pretty close.
Side note on the game. We use to have open mechs contests, where you could use any tech to build a mech. Make 3 mechs to play. I used tons of clan tech, put a beagle probe on a mech that could run around 29+ or some ungodly hexes. First round, my light mech (15 ton i think) was behind them. Nobody had a chance. Oh the time wasted on it.

Re:Middle East Wire -- Interesting
How could you claim it goes unreported? I watch the news in the US, and I've seen quite a few horrible things done to the Palestinians.. I don't quite know why people keep claiming that we're completely biased against the Palestinians. No one is innocent here, but no one is completely guilty either.

Re:Middle East Wire -- Interesting
The Pentagon controls the flow of information in a war zone - they say what footage gets cut, because reporters cannot get anywhere near the action without military assistance.
How can people truly believe that the government controls all of our media? Of course they try to put a good face on things, but if the government is actually controlling our media, they're doing a piss poor job of it.
Watch the news stations.. plenty of people saying that they hope we don't attack another country. "I hope we don't screw things up like the golf war". "Look at these pictures from when we blew up a school".
Our media is about as open as you can get in showing the US citizens the problems in their own government. Listen to people from a country that Doesn't have the freedom of the press.. people insisting that the US hates all other countries.. insisting that the US attacks them all the time, that the US has never helped anyone but themselves. Those are the foolish statements of people who don't have access to free press.
I've read British newspapers, Chinese newspapers, Russian newspapers.. there is no "fake" footage, or "cut" footage, unless you're claiming that every single media outlet in the world is controlled by the US military.. which would be extremely impressive.

Re:Middle East Wire -- Interesting
How could you say the US doesn't care about other countries? The US's monetary donations to charities/developing countries far surpasses any other country in the world. While I would not say the US's foreign policy is perfect, I would also not dream of saying that the US government is in the habit of ignoring people outside of their own country.
And I certainly don't think causing the largest terrorist attack in history is going to cause anything but more pain for the innocents of the world.

How ordinary people respond to such tragedies.
This link was passed around, even heard quotes from it on a local radio station:
