Re:It IS mainstream alreadyI would be GLAD to give several hundred dollars to any company that can make a consistent, user-friendly, non-MS OS for my x86 hardware (all of it, not just some). Is this possible? Apple - where are you?
Linux will be ready for the desktop when Gnome or KDE drop dead (I can't wait) and some consistency settles in. Until then, I'll run BSD on my servers (the documentation is much better as a result of the consistency) and Windows on the desktop.
Then you should look at
Xandros Linux
Which is based on debian/corel linux and is quite goodOr
LindowsOr
Lycoris
All of these are quite good Windows replacments and they will get better. Have a look at each and their prices/policies. Lindows has click'n'run which you have heard of. Lycoris I have used and is quite good.

Re:Games of the past
I just read a post from a guy that is designing a 2D side-scrolling mod for UT2003. He's now looking for people to help design maps. There's a basic screenshot there. Another post there pointed to an interesting game called Soldat. From the site: "Soldat is a unique side-view multiplayer action game. It takes the best from games like Liero, Worms, Quake and Counter-Strike and gives you fast action gameplay with tons of blood and flesh. Soldiers fight against each other on 2D battle arenas using a deadly military arsenal. This is why multiplayer was invented."

Re:Linux Version?From linuxgames
:
foser wrote in to point out a little bit of information regarding the possibility of UT2003 being ported to Linux. The information came from an IRC interview in which Mark Rein from Epic participated:
[19:35] DE/Epic: Will UT2003 make it to Linux? If so, server, client or both?
[19:35] Server for sure on Linux
[19:36] MarkRein[Epic]: any word on a client
[19:36] Irix--> Don't know yet about a client but it will probably happen eventually
[19:37] Irix--> We'd definitely like to see it and I know Dan Vogel is talking with some friends of his who would like to do it.
From me:
It doesn't matter that Loki is out of business.
Epic did the original port. Not Loki. Loki just maintained it. -
Re:Herzog Zwei!
I remember spending late nights with my buddies in high school wasting hours and hours battling each other playing Herzog Zwei during the height of the Sega Genesis. Having fond memories of this classic game, I searched google to see if anyone had re-released this game on different platforms or if anyone had tried to recreate it.
I was pleasantly surprised to see this guy working on a recreation of the game he was calling HZ:

It seems to have been in alpha form for over a year now, which is unfortunate, but the source is available and it has been ported to Linux! NOTE: This web site also has a scan of the original manual for the Sega Genesis game.
Also interesting is a site for a Herzog Zwei mod for UT (Unreal Tournament). I'm not sure how that is going to work, but it seems to be under active development:

This could be great. Herzog in a 3D world with online playing capabilities... -
Re:Here's an interesting bit...
Unreal tournament has already been modded for vehicles a long time ago.
