The first newsgroup mention of the word 'emoticons', in the Jargon File draft by ESR posted on June 12, 1990, indicates that many smilies were already in common use at that time.
EMOTICON (ee-moh'ti-cahn) n. An ASCII glyph used to indicate an
emotional state in email or news. Hundreds have been proposed, but
only a few are in common use. These include:
:-) Smiley face (indicates laughter) :-( Frowney face (indicates sadness, anger or upset) ;-) Half-smiley (ha ha only serious), aka winkey face. :-/ Wry face
Of these, the first two are by far the most frequently encountered.
Hyphenless forms of them are common on CompuServe, GEnie and BIX; see
also BIXIE.
I believe it was the lead singer, Thom Yorke, who said that he preferred LPs. He's apparently changing his tune though as his solo album 'The Eraser' has been in the top 50 selling albums on iTunes since it came out July 10th.
You may find the Eclipse of Mars illusion interesting because it tricks your eye into seeing true Cyan, instead of the washed out version that most monitors produce.
Give Foxit Reader a try (the download link is on the left). It's super fast, integrates with IE and Firefox and has ctrl-f search functionality. PCWorld rates it higher than Acrobat Reader. I've only ever had trouble with one PDF and unfortunately that's the PDF in the article - the password 'grail' isn't opening it.
I remember before Windows 95 was announced, I was astonished that Bill Gates started talking about how bad Windows 3.1 was. After 95 was announced I finally realized that they were just badmouthing their old version to drum up interest for their new version. As I read this article it seemed to me that this could simply be another case of bad mouthing XP to get people motivated to buy the less spyware-prone Vista.
My previous attempt breaks a few other headers in the nav bars, so here's another try. This one just moves the score under the subject heading and makes the text bigger. Drop the two font declarations to just use the normal text size. This does make the bar too tall in my opinion, but I couldn't figure out a way to just move the score next to the subject without breaking anything else.
Perhaps it would be easier if they used ethanol fuel cells as you could just board the plane with no fuel and then order a vodka or gin and pour it right in. (The real fun would begin when the lady in the next seat looks over in alarm and you just say, "Well, the poor little bugger doesn't like to fly, so I'm just giving him a little something to calm his nerves.")
You'd have to pry my mouse and keyboard out of my cold, dead hands.. but on the other hand, this Red Steel trailer does make the first person gameplay with the Wii controller look pretty damn fun. (Then again, having to freeze time to tag each location to shoot the pistol is a cool effect, but it just makes me think how with a mouse you'd have those 6 shots off before the Wii controller had even tagged one of those guys)
Good catch.. thanks. Actually, I got the idea because two days ago somebody on Digg showed that same search on MSN Search returned nothing relevant at all (although it is definitely starting to slowly pick up some links) so the fact that the A9 search returned nothing was what I expected and I didn't even think to check my spelling.
I need to go Wii Wii, ha ha, my wii wii is bigger than yours, WII the second world war, W2 time to pay taxes, this little piggie goes Wii Wii Wii all the way home, honey, wii need to talk...
could everyone please stop it with the car analogies? a computer is nothing like a car.
Requesting no more car vs. computer analogies on Slashdot is like using WD-40 as the primary lubricant in your old Buick.. it will eliminate the squeak in the short term, but you won't get too far.
I wonder if the technology they'll be using for the Laser TVs will be any use because the new Mitsubishi model coming out next year is supposed to have almost zero width trim.
I definitely agree with you, but Digg has been getting a bit better since they added threaded conversations a few weeks ago. Recently I was reading these comments (granted it is the games area which doesn't get the same level of attention) and realized that the matching thread on Digg had a similar level of clowning and prejudice, but at least the Digg crew questioned the study and realized that it was flawed and reported inaccurately. This is only one case of this happening, but perhaps it is a sign of changes to come.
A dual-core really doesn't make games snapper, as I can't think of any that are designed as multi-threaded
Most games may not be designed for dual core currently, but some of the latest game's have had patches that have provided excellent results, so I bet we'll see more soon. From Firing Squad's review of the Quake 4 patch, "Biased or not, beta or no, there's a lot to like about the latest patch for Quake 4, whether you have an Athlon 64 X2 or a dual-core/Hyper-Threaded Intel chip. The two architectures each pick up phenomenal performance gains." Their review mentions a similar patch for Call Of Duty 2.
I was interested in your comment and decided to do some research to find more information. Unfortunately, searching with all permutations of Apple/Music/Records/Label/Beatles that I could think of on Britannica returned no information at all, while a simple search for Apple Records on Wikipedia returned a thorough and unbiased article.
As for the lawsuit, neither source mentioned it, but at least Wikipedia linked to a seemingly non-biased summary.
So I guess my point is that people have to decide what's better.. lots of information with a rare chance of zealotry, or no information at all.
what's my motivation for taking the time to download FireFox
Extensions. IE 7 doesn't have AdBlock+, FlashBlock, Tab Mix +, session manager, live bookmarks, web developer toolbar, HTMLTidy source checker, HTTP live headers, Greasemonkey scripts, Slashdotter, or any number of a huge list of extremely handy utilities.

Well, apparently you can train them to do synchronized swimming.
You ask, the DS you provides. If YouTube ever comes back from the dead, here's some in-game footage.
Anyone that doesn't believe him should check out this video. (this was a recent digg post)
These colors definitely don't exist in monitors
You may find the Eclipse of Mars illusion interesting because it tricks your eye into seeing true Cyan, instead of the washed out version that most monitors produce.
M$ only invested about $20 in advertising the system in Japan.
So the Xbox 360 lounge was what, about $15 of that?

span.score {position: relative !important; top: -8px !important; padding-left: 15px !important; margin-left: 15px !important; font-weight: bold; font-size: 115%; } h4 {padding: 3px 0px 7px 10px !important}
Add this to your custom stylesheet to move scores back to the left:
span.score {position: relative !important; left: 0px !important; right: 0px !important; bottom: 0px !important; top: 0px !important} h4 {display: inline !important;}
Try getting THAT through airport security.

Here's the google video of it.
;)
You're right. I listened to the Google video you linked to and it was dead silent for the entire duration.

Compare these searches for "Nintendo Wii" to see what a poor choice they've made:
A9
Google
They're just trying to compete on equal footing with the PiSs3.
And it has just dreadful connotations..
I need to go Wii Wii,

Too bad it's still ugly.
It doesn't matter as long as they remember to add Angelina Jolie lips..
