Q3A, BF1942, BF:V, UT2004, DOOM 3, & HL2
I bought UT2004 recently on DVD because of Alien Swarm and Red Orchestra mods. I didn't care about its regular UT2004 game. The playable demo didn't impressed me except the pretty graphics. The mods were the big stars for me.
I bought BF1942 for its game mostly, but I was surprised to see mods coming out like Forgotten Hope, Battlefield Pirates, Desert Combat, Galactic Conquest, etc.
I hope the same is for DOOM 3 for mod support. I would love to see Aliens-type of game with DOOM 3 engine and with co-operative play. How about System Shock 2 type of game? I loved that game! It was scary.
I sold Quake 3 Arena a few days ago and uninstalled Half-Life a few months ago because it was time to leave their engines and their mods. -
No mentioning of Forgotten Hope?
Forgotten Hope is extremely well-done. Its focus is on a mix of realism and fun. Tons of new maps, and kickass weaponry like the King Tiger, IS-2, and many, many more vehicles, each with distinct handling characteristics (unlike bf1942, where everything feels arcadey).
I've never gone back to vanilla '42 since. It just seems so weak in comparison. Oh, it's a bit hefty at 1.2GB (!!), and 1GB of RAM is strongly recommended.

http://www.dcxtended.com/ Desert combat Extended
DC_Extended is an extension of Desert Combat for Battlefield 1942. It's purpose is to add certain weapons that I feel would make the game more fun to play, modify existing weapons to compensate for minor annoyances and to modify certain official maps to take advantage of the new weapons.

This mod is about post-Vietnam special operations.
Special Operations Forces to be included in release 0.1 are the US Delta Force and Task Force 160 helicopter unit (the Night Stalkers), the Green Berets, the British Special Air Service (SAS) and the Australian Special Air Service Regiment (SASR). Opposition forces will include Taliban, Iraqi (Desert Storm & Iraqi Freedom) and Somali troops. In 0.2, we will add units such as the Rangers and Navy SEALS, and many more maps in places like Bosnia, Grenada, Panama and the Falkland Islands. -
Same with Forgotten Hope mod...
v0.61 doesn't include any graphics related to Nazi symbols and other stuff. There is an upcoming patch with these graphics will be released soon on its Web site. The main reason for censorship is Germany.

Re:Battlefield 1942This is despite EA Games being very reluctant to support mods. Even the map editor promised shortly after the game was released only came out almost a year later and after a lot of complaining in the BF community.
Sounds familiar. A buddy of mine does work on the Forgotten Hope mod for Battlefield 1942, and I can remember him bitching about EA's tools. He mentioned that some of the guys from his mod team would respond to replies by EA Games of "Well, what more do you want?" with a resounding "Source code!"
I guess they were tired of EA dragging their feet and wanted to make some tools of their own.
