Re:Too soon?
I always thought that all of Nolan's Batman movies sucked badly.

Re:No surprises here
This really shouldn't surprise anyone. I've long known that Facebook's like button is really slow and this seems to confirm my suspicions. I'd love it if Google came up with something similar - buzz is too much effort. Just a "like' button would be great.

Re:NASA
This is one of the reasons why I'm donating all my money after I die to create a fund that will help get us off this planet.

Re:As an Indian citizen
Already posted this here once, but looks like you didn't read the earlier comments.
The Indian constitution does guarantee privacy and the courts have always upheld this principle.
In fact from what I understand, the US has less privacy controls in their constitution than India does. -
Re:Pros...
Privacy concerns cannot be "outweighed" because:
1. Privacy is a legal right guaranteed by the Indian Constitution
2. The courts have repeatedly shown that they will uphold privacy
3. People fought and died for freedoms - not development. Losing privacy is one step towards losing freedoms that we have earned
You may not treasure your privacy and that's your right. But don't tell me that I mustn't care for it in the name of "Development." A person like you will probably applaud the Chinese government for development at the cost of privacy. -
Re:Cheers for PETA
because vegetables and plants have their own minds too
No they don't. Without a central nervous system, where does the "mind" come in?
some plants (especially in rain forests) defend themself when an enemy goes closer
Is it merely a reflex decision, or do they have to think about it? The concept of mind and consciousness comes in only when a decision has to be made. It'd be useless for consciousness or a mind to evolve in a plant which never needed to make a "decision". It would therefore never evolve as a feature.
But as mentioned, no Central Nervous System - ergo no mind, consciousness, thought, or pain. As far as I'm concerned, plants are biological machines -
Re:And cows are happier that way
Dude, if you think that cows (or any other animals we eat) are happy before they die and are treated well, you're laboring under a heavy illusion. Their lives are pretty fucked up both before they come to die and while they die as well.
In this regard, I can confidently say that their lives are not happy. -
Re:Unfounded optimism
Spot on - the UK recently gave up on ID cards because it was (amongst other reasons) too costly.
How on earth is India going to afford it with 20 times the population and 51 times less per capita GDP? Something's not right here. -
Re:As an Indian Citizen, I welcome this
I am aware that Americans strongly believe in individual privacy and are only too eager to shudder and sneer at such measures. Privacy is a valid concern, but the need for privacy is stronger in the West and lesser in the East - one f those strange cultural differences - it simply matters less to us here. And in the hierarchy of needs, the rights of basic citizenship and access to government resources matters more than an individual need for privacy.
Speak for yourself.
The risk of misuse, however, is not a sufficient argument against the very real need for introduction of such an identity system in our country.
The loss of my freedom and privacy is a sufficient argument against them. Do you think we fought and gave our lives for independence only to come under surveillance by other Indians? My privacy is so valuable to me because getting them back will be an extremely uphill task once people like you give it up easily.
In addition, I think the Supreme Court of India will agree with me. As soon as the cards are misused, someone will file a PIL that will teach the government (and people like you) that my rights are not to be screwed with.
