Re:Modesty and Knowledge.
Which wouldn't be noteworthy, except for the numerous other factions that make no such admission, ever.
http://bible.cc/1_corinthians/13-12.htm
I'd be quite careful with depicting religious belief as automatically and totally dictating truth.
Any system of control will naturally claim to have all the answers, and some of the general pulic tends to have a misunderstanding that science has all the answers.
In fact, science could be just as usable as a forced authoritarian doctrine to control a people as any religion. The mere fact that it hasn't been yet so abused is not indicative of a fundamental nature of science. -
"Peter's chopped-off ear"
Or healing Peter's chopped off ear?
Sidenote, but Peter cut off Malchus's ear. I guess, in a manner of speaking, it could be "Peter's chopped off ear"... -
Re:So what you're saying is......
Look it up some time, no apostle ever worshiped on Sunday
Please elucidate in light of Acts 20:7, assuming you agree that "breaking bread" in this context refers to the Lord's Supper, as it does often in scripture (e.g. 1 Corinthians 11) and not an ordinary meal. If you do not, I believe there are other suitable verses.
I agree with much of what you say. I am a Christian, but while I believe in the Bible's infallibility as originally inspired, I do not believe in the infallibility of my own interpretation of its complexities: therefore I do my best to not reject new information because I can't figure out how to reconcile it with what I believe.
Now we see through a glass, darkly...

Re:Links....
Um.... Elected a born-again Christian president who can't see the applicability of Matthew 7:3 to the policies he promotes or condones?

Re:How will the religious establishment react? The Bible already has a built-in clause that we fundies can use. John 10:16 -- "I have other sheep, which are not of this fold." There are many ideas on what this could mean -- non-Jews? people living on other continents at the time? extra-terrestrials?
There is no Biblical requirement that earth is either the center of creation, or the sole location of living things. This is why, if they do find life on other planets, I'll be quite excited to learn more -- but it won't cause me to question what I already know about God's kingdom.

Re:Moron.
My biggest beef with Linus was his brilliant idea of putting the kernel under the GPL in the first place. Thanks to that move, anyone who wants to use Linux now also has to be saddled with Mr. Personality and his Legions of Doom.
That however is only the biggest problem. It's not the only one. Because of several things however, I've done this where Linux is concerned. If I ever use a free UNIX again in the future, it will probably be NetBSD...although in order to avoid these types of problems recurring, I won't be having anything to do with it's developers, either.
I no longer look forward to the day Microsoft goes bankrupt, if such a day comes. Linux is a system written by and for autistic juveniles, and is not going to be remotely close to being ready to replace Windows until that fact changes. I hold out scant hope, however, that it ever will. -
Re:explanation on the 666
Emperor Domitian was a contemporary of St. John the Beloved. Domitian caused a massive statue of himself to be built at Ephesus, overlooking the marketplace. Anyone who wanted to get into the marketplace had to purchase and burn incense in worship to him. Once you had paid for the incense they used a warm blob of wax or a bit of pigment, making a mark on your wrist or forehead to prove you had paid. To worship the Emperor and to swear loyalty to your country were one and the same, considered inseperable. To say "I support our troops but not the Emperor" was sedition. When Christians refused to buy incense, they were asked "Why do you hate your country? Do you wish the Emperor dead?"
Domitian also had a Greek chorus of 24 singers robed in white that followed him around. Ceaselessly they cried "Holy, holy, holy is our lord and our god Domitian who was and who is and who is to come", falling down and worshipping him. For more information about Domitian, find a book by Plutarch in your local library. -
Re:The whole idea of a missing link
A. Who said God created the entire universe for the benefit of humans? That seems to be a caricature of a creationist viewpoint.
This verse indicates the universe exists for God's pleasure, not only mine or yours: Bible reference
B. Stars and galaxies invisible to us may still have a _huge_ bearing on our existence. You didn't answer my question: Or do you think excising invisible stars and galaxies has no effect on the structure of the universe?
C. Yes, everything *has* a purpose. But can any human understand the purpose of *everything*? Nope.

Help with the reference
Great reference, DS.

There are so many levels this post is working on. -
True.I hope everyone realizes the issue at hand is rampant poverty not blatant stupidity.
The issue is ignorance. Ignorance is oft curable. Stupidity is for life. The permanance of poverty you may take on faith or not.

Re:Sounds good to me.
Love must be given freely. Have you not ever heard that sometimes, you have to let the one you love go?
I agree with both those things, and indeed, that's why I'm complaining.
Are you a control freak by any chance?
Is Jesus Christ a control freak, by any chance?
Where is this demanding for reciprocity?
He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
You cannot force someone to love you.
Exactly! That's why Christ/Yahweh's attempts to force love are so very wrong. One might even call it evil. -
Re:Another statisticAh, yes, false balance. The need to find fault on both sides - where one side is egregiously at fault - is another bane of today's media, as well as unBiblical. Worry about a draft is entirely reasonable; the all-volunteer military is severely overstretched. "Stop-loss" is keeping people in the military longer than they want to be, and even with hefty bonuses, the Army isn't going meet quotas.
I think what motivates people's unease is a gut sense of the numbers - since Dick Cheney gutted the military, we don't have the numbers required for an indefinite occupation of two countries. We're only where we are now thanks to an unprecedented callup of the National Guard and Reserves - if we need more troops, where are they going to come from?
I'll grant you that by itself, re-appointing people to draft boards is no big deal. However, it is the height of foolishness to take this administration's word that everything is rosy - particularly given their track record with WMD and the economy. We're in a situation now where the US is delaying ground action in Fallujah until after the US election, for domestic political reasons.
Are you familiar with a "special skills draft"? I think it's even shown up on Slashdot. Take a look at the slightly contorted statements Bush is making - he's not ruling out a special skills draft, or even mandatory national service (military service optional).
Did you know that the chairman of the RNC threatened legal action against Rock the Vote for trying to use a threat of a draft to motivate college students? Do you feel comfortable with political parties deciding what is or isn't acceptible speech?
Of course, the mainstream media wasn't bothered by the chairman of a party that controls all branches of government threatening legal action for stating an Unfact. I think that proves my point, which was that you can't be educated paying attention to the mainstream media.

Re:Fallacies
Luke 16:13 ring a bell?
Christianity, to a Christian, necessarily and by default, means more than science or anything else. If there truly are "many" scientists out there who profess to believe in the unverifiable specific-case mysticism of the collection of books assembled by the Council in Nicea called The Bible, then you can be sure which worldview is dominant.
But regardless, one thing's for certain: "the set of people" is not what's appearing in these threads, and you're the one committing a fallacy of conflation. "People" hold contradictory opinions (for instance: Christians. Ha ha). But there can be no disputing that the core components of Christianity - even to the historiocity of Jesus - do not hold up to scientific scrutiny. Because of this, it's reasonable to assume that anyone seriously interested in using science as a tool for understanding the universe (rather than, for instance, using it as a tool to justify extant irrational beliefs) would have no need for Christianity, which is not only incompatible as far as dogma and verifiability go, but also seeks to serve the same purpose.
P.S. - Bush is a hard-core statist and is very much enamored with your personal tax dollars, and the mainstream basis for disagreement with him is his announced motive for restricting stem cell research - Christian morality - rather than any argument about acceptable government use of tax dollars. -
Pi == 3
So, according to The Bible, the nanotube should be exactly 30 atoms in diameter!
