    Smashing Pumpkins also released their last album, Machina II: Friends and Enemies of Modern Music for free in mp3 format, though more in frustration with their label than anything else, as I understand it and not as a social stand against the assault on filesharing.

    They were and still are one of my favorite bands, if not my favorite, but unfortunately the album itself didn't make much of an impression on me. There are only a couple songs on it I really like. I don't think they made nearly as much of an effort of polishing this release as they did their previous albums.

    when the smashing pumpkins released machina 2: the friends and enemies of modern music on the internet, it was partly because virgin records wasn't interested in the album (especially not a double album) after the lackluster sales of their previous album, machina: the machines of god. there is a link explaining all about it here, and you can download machina 2 here.

    In my opinion it's better than MachinaI.

    It's correct it was Billy'c attempt to say fuck you with the record labels, which didn't think it was worth it releasing the album, since MachinaI didn't make them millions.

    The Pumpkins, as I understand it, pushed Machina II out on P2P because Virgin were not interested in putting out another record in a similar vein after Machina I had done so poorly ( hell with that, I thought it was great. )

    You can get it at beZip.de, or from the Chicago Metro's website, or finally from this fansite.

    Try threading the tracks back into the original Machina order as given on Billys diagram, and I, at least, find the story a bit easier to follow.

    Bummer the Machina III remix album from the aborted animated series never got released!

    There's tons of The Smashing Pumpkins stuff that Billy (lead singer) got people to release. Some major stuff, like a 5 disc set of B-sides (Mashed Potatoes).

    Most of this stuff here was made by Billy himself, and given to an online fan with the message to "circulate this". He's a pretty cool guy, and he's going to be releasing a new album.
