Re:real reason why
I know a few people who would disagree with you: http://bindows.net/ (Click for quick demo) I realize it's not perfect, but IMO you can't say it doesn't have potential.

Re:Gonna have to fix IE
I tried their class browser: here. It doesn't even work in Firefox (the child windows with class's properties, etc just has a little white box, and the pop-up menu when clicking on the icon on the left of the titlebar of those windows appears in completely the wrong place). Performance-wise, IE and Firefox are about the same, although Firefox is maybe a little slower and spikes the CPU a little more.

Re:I wonder what technology it will use
1. I doubt that Ajax has the power to support a full office suit that could compete with MS Office. Why? All you're using AJAX for is the UI, any real processing is being done server-side. And if you want an example of what AJAX can do UI-wise, check out the demos at Bindows - it's pretty cool.

What about Bindows?
Bindows (note the B) is a pretty cool framework for AJAX. It can be downloaded for free for educational/research purposes http://www.bindows.net./ For commercial it's $695. No, I don't work for them, and am not slashvertising. I haven't ever heard any mention of it on
/. and wondered if people just don't know of it or don't like it. I'm writing a .NET backend (will be GPL eventually) for it that will make client-server more seamless. Automatic event hook-ups, state-syncs, etc. -
Re:Slow pain
Have you checked out http://www.bindows.net/ ?
It's really cool.
I do hope we could develop web-only AJAX applications, especially for rapid development of (psuedo) cross-platform applications.
Bindows seems to do the trick, basically. -
Check out this cool javascript stuff

Re:XUL deserves more light
Again, you've been able to do this with javascript and html for a long time now:

Nothing to see here, move along
That kind of stuff has been done already for years in plain javascript and HTML:

Mod Parent Up
Despite his trollish past, he seems to be serious. I've never heard of Bindows.

It isn't OSS, but ...
what about Bindows?
It is fairly compatible, has a great look and feel, and doesn't do those annoying reloads. -
Re:Is Xindows taken?
>What's to stop Aindows, Bindows, etc from trying the same thing?
Not much
