Re:Before anyone blames KKKonervative$
If a gun carrier stands out, they will self police.
I'm not a big guy by any means and I can conceal a full-size 1911 without imprinting. I don't stand out in any way when I carry.
California seems to be doing a pretty good job with their gun laws.
Indeed, we are; except for the bullshit that started in 2017, which your link really doesn't represent. I'd also like to point out that California also currently accounts for 10% of the 30 cities with the highest murder rates in the US (#9, #17, and #18) and that those are the cities with the most restrictive local gun laws in the state. Statistically, California should have a 60% chance of having even one city on that list; less, if weighted by per-capita incidence of gun violence, yet here we are making up 10% of that list.
Hell, in 2015, Oakland had the 5th highest murder rate in the US and placed #3 for gun crimes. Hell, Stockton was #14 for murder rate, to Indianapolis' #19 in 2015; Indianapolis was also #19 in gun crime that year.
An I'm not sure gun control should be a priority when, even in Indiana (where gun deaths per capita are nearly double California), the flu killed more people than guns in 2014 and 2015, the two years for which your source has that data. In fact, that seems to hold true everywhere in the US, Alaska being the exception. Maybe we should prioritize that? -
Re:Pipeline protests make no sense
... decrease the amount of energy and risk of transporting it via conventional methods..
Only problem is that doesn't seem to be true:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...
The risk to fresh water supplies is very real. The pipeline has already been rerouted once due to concerns of water supply contamination in the event of a spill for Bismark:
http://bismarcktribune.com/new...
The current route would take it right past the water supply for the reservation. Contrary to information that's circulating, the tribe has been very active in it's opposition to the pipeline being near their water supply since it was proposed to reroute through their land. They most certainly didn't "wait around" just so they could protest. The the objection has nothing to do with "burial grounds" but access to clean drinking water. This is complete and total misinformation.
Pipelines aren't safer, just more profitable. Maybe they _could_ be made safer than truck and train tankers, but my guess is that then they wouldn't be any more profitable.

Breaking news: Judge dismisses riot charges.
According to the local paper.

Re:Hmm...
Well, here is what the AG told the local paper:
“She’s a protester, basically. Everything she reported on was from the position of justifying the protest actions,” said Erickson, adding that her coverage of the Sept. 3 protest did not mention that people trespassed during the incident or the alleged assaults on guards.
In other words, he doesn't believe this person covered the government's position fairly, and therefore doesn't deserve to be considered a journalist.

Re:Smile!
The facial recognition software isn't really to compare with your photos in public, it's primarily so that can check within the system whether you're getting licenses issued for yourself under different names.

Nicknames: falling between hobbies and history
As someone who's interviewed technical people for jobs, esp. 10 years ago or so, it seems that most of the online nicknames would relate to "hobby" activities. Applying the same rules, that can help you or hurt you: if I like reading about your social money lending (Sydney Morning Herald - Online social money lending takes off), I may be further impressed and want to interview or hire you, but if I don't like your ability to code widgets then it won't make a difference for a technical job.
Given the upcoming ubiquity of online profiles, most people will have them from their early teens (bismarcktribune.com - Myspace generation . The rules should change as hiring managers themselves start to have online personas that cross the gray lines of hirability. So maybe people will only be judged by their LinkedIn-type postings that are meant to be for business history.
And sites like My Death Space may be joined by sites, such as one poster related to old usenet postings, that showcase frozen profiles of people who lost their passwords or account access, and stopped updating even as they continue to live on. -
