Re:gaim works for me, but loses ground from here
I've never used epic4 but I use BitchX and have no complaints. I'm not in IRC very often anyway.

Re:Secure talking not very common
Somehow, it is quite hard to _really_ initiate a secure communication without much work.
I won't say anything insightful here, but when I need a Secure Internet Live Conferencing(tm) to safely talk about some top secret stuff with people I work with, then we just connect to our server with ssh, run BitchX and use a local IRC daemon. Quite easy and secure for me, especially when most of the work is in shell anyway. -
OpenNap already shares any media without a hack

OpenNap already does thisthe OpenNap server already has these features and its been available for quite some time now, there is even the flexibility to do porn searching just like the software in this story and iMesh (avi's, mpegs, au, etc). Opennap can be found Here. here is a list of the available napster clones excluding the one in the story.
gnap -- gnome napster client
gnome-napster -- gnome napster client
jnap -- java napster client
jnapster -- java napster client
java napster -- java napster client
crapster -- BeOS napster client
gnapster -- gnome napster client
BitchX -- IRC chat client with napster plugin
Knapster -- KDE napster client
BeNapster -- BeOS napster client
gtk napster -- gtk napster client
amster -- amiga napster client
iNapster -- WWW interface to napster
BWap -- standalone console unix client based on bx-nap plugin for BitchX
These are all open source and free, and will work with Opennap servers (although most right now probably aren't coded to take advantage of the Pr0n search extensions, yet. Give it some time though.

Re:When you got Linux, was it because it was OSS?
I learned about Linux on IRC (first through shell accounts before actually installing it myself), and maybe it being open source wasn't the big part of it, but I know it was at least a factor. I used it to compile eggdrop and maybe a few other programs, and I thought that to be fun (and I still do). Not to mention the cool IRC client, BitchX.
