Get REAPER! OS X or Windows only!
No free beer, no free cost: Reaper But it really whips the llama's ass!
Seriously! It is available for OS X and Windows, is shareware and comes with a two way license model. Both licenses are the same, full-featured application, but one is for amateurs (US$ 60), the other one is for professionals (US$ 225). It's constantly supported, updates just fly in, community is great, both in size as in character.
It is being developed by Justin Frankel, who also created WinAmp, SHOUTcast, Gnutella and the Nullsoft Installer (NSIS) and his company Cockos.
I understand, that the question was about a Linux solution, but as far as I know, for professional audio-work, you have only two chances: Steinberg, Logic, etc. or Reaper.

dangerous geek? hardly, look at his girlfriendI have *never* seen a geek with a girlfriend that looks like this: Justin's GF
and
If he is "dangerous", it's because he gives all the other geeks an inferiority complex.

Re:Freeamp under Windows?
Many people prefer Winamp, which has a very good Ogg Vorbis player plugin available.
-
Big support for the boys at Vorbis
I'm glad to see this... MP3's have received so much attention, none of the other codecs haven't been in the news much. Sure, there's the random article comparing 4 or 5 codecs that no one's ever going to use, or the little articles saying that people hear an improvement in Ogg over MP3. But have you seen people using
.ogg's? I do. Everything I've ripped is now in Ogg. Better quality, more flexibility, and a superior acoustic model.
I thought listening to the BBC over Ogg was cool. I remembered the first time I'd heard it over shortwave. Not to mention that it worked flawlessly. Then again, I'lve always got the latest plugin for my Winamp, and my XMMS. No annoying RealPlayer crap. No proprietary codecs. It works on my non-Windows boxes.
I sent a brief, yet eloquent note to the BBC webmaster when the original test completion was finished, and will probably send another encouraging this continued project. I would encourage the same from others.
Support your local hackers. (no, not crackers. hackers. Damn Hollywood crap.) -
Re:Which formats support simple batch manipulationReplayGain is actually a system designed to deal with this. It stores some info in the music file so that you can normalize the volumes of all of your files on playback.
I'm not familiar with the state of MP3 tools which support ReplayGain, but I know that Gian-Carlo Pascutto just wrote a tool to add ReplayGain information to Ogg Vorbis files. There is an XMMS support in CVS which uses the information, and I just got done adding support for ReplayGain to ogg123 (it will be about a week before it goes into the xiph.org CVS pending the approval of some other changes). Winamp also supports ReplayGain using Peter's Vorbis plugin

Re:vorbis needs a little while to market penitrate
Here is the link to the 'Official' Vorbis plugin for WinAmp. Despite the other message, it's still not included by default in a WinAmp install, but hopefully should be in the next version.

Re:How to get attention to Ogg Vorbis
How about this one?
:) It's currently up to version 1.05, and it'll be in the main Winamp distribution the next time they release an upgrade to Winamp. -
Re:I use 'em almost exclusively
I don't know of any standalone apps, but there's a plugin for Winamp that can do that. This particular plugin is being developed for Nullsoft by the same guy who does their MIDI plugin. He's also done a Vorbis encoder plugin for Winamp.

Re:when is vorbis coming up ?
Development moves along as usual. A Quicktime component for OS9 is being worked on, test streaming servers are going up, and Winamp will include a Vorbis plugin in an upcoming version (probably the next version). You can snag a copy of the plugin here. I use it, and it's quite a bit better than the plugin at Vorbis.com.
