Re:Not Alone
Washington University in St. Louis also slows down Kazaa. But it is not a problem really. If I want to get files, we have set up a local hub using direct-connect. It is incredibly fast (I usually get speeds of 2-10 MB/sec (yes, that's megabytes))It is fast because it is all within the Wash. U. network, therefore none of the precious external bandwidth is used up. The only problem is that somethimes the newest songs are not available to be traded yet. But for us, blubster circumvents the slowdown because blubster uses udp, not tcp like most p2p software. Blubster can only be used to download songs though.

FastTrack is Centralized
Is it really as decentralized as it's touted to be?
Just last week ago an article popped up on the File Sharing Portal ZeroPaid which described new evidence that FastTrack (Kazaa, iMesh etc.) has more of a centralized nature than we once believed.
Not only does it have a Centralized server used as a Bootstrap (To find Supernodes), but it also has NETWORK SUPERNODES. Meaning, they are dedicated Supernodes on a server. They are always up, always fast, always avaliable. In addition, the Network has a central server for bootstrap porposes and so that they can regulate which clients connect to the network (they have a gateway system, that's how they turned off Morpheus). Network Peers and regular Supernodes (computer users) are involved as well.
The developers of FastTrack (names) have opened a new website called Joltid which has a model similar to what the RIAA said it was like. I'm guessing the website is for companies to purchase the technology, but the developers will no longer release clients for free to the public. This is obviously saying "Kazaa is gone, time to start up a new company."
Oh well. If FastTrack goes down (which it will), there are many, many, many alternatives. -
Re:MORE BULLSHIT ON CD SALES
How many people are on GNUtella [sic] or Kazza [sic]?
According to LimeWire, Gnutella currently has just over 300,000 users (immediately after Morpheus PE was released, they had 1/2 million users until everyone realized it sucked). KaZaA, by which you mean FastTrack, currently has 1654043 users online, sharing 291261K files (1706208.0 GB). Slyck is a good quick reference for comparing network sizes. Although a bit out of date, their current stats are:- FastTrack - 1,314,066
- iMesh - 429,498
- Gnutella - 221,922
- eDonkey - 155,356
- DirectConnect - 83,464
- FileNavigator - Down
- SongSpy - 14,022
- Blubster - 5,961

Alternatives to Kazaa
I quit using Kazaa many months ago. There are a ton of alternatives out there. However, many of them suck. In my opinion, these are the best:
Blubster - This is what I use. Selection is good. Speed is excellent.
WinMX - Pretty good. Selection is excellent. Speed and availability are not good.
Xolox - Excellent Gnutella client with NO SPYWARE. Selection is excellent. Speed is excellent (it can download from multiple sources at once).
