Prepare for Kylix: The Compiler and RTL
Borland/Inprise Web site has this article about Kylix - the Compiler and the RTL - what's going on, what will be in the Linux version, what's in and out. Developers who are planning to port applications from Windows to Linux (and vice versa?) would love this article. You may also want to take a look here if you don't know much about Kylix. -

Is Linux Ready For Delphi? -- Delphi R&D Answers
Chrismo writes: "Danny Thorpe, Sr. R&D Engineer at Borland, has written a great article addressing "some of the commonly expressed fears, misconceptions, and even misplaced euphoria" heard from the Delphi community since the announcement of their move to support Linux with their development tools." -
Borland C++ Now Free-as-in-Beer
BlueBlade writes, "Inprise, formerly known as Borland (and now merging with Corel) has released their latest compiler for free. They said the move was to show support for the open source community. You can find the full article here. " It's Free Beer though. No source code, although such a release would really show their support for the Open Source Community. -
New Borland/Inprise Linux Developer Survey
We've mentioned the Borland/Inprise Linux Developers Surveys before. Kinda like the The Linux Counter, it's a way for the needs of the community to be codified and show the corporate folks that we really do count - in numbers and in skills. So, check out the latest survey and we'll probably post the results in a few weeks.Update: 02/15 01:46 by michael : Readers will notice that one of your fellow readers is abusing the system. Take my word for it that CmdrTaco is well aware of the situation and is preparing to Take Steps. It is frankly a shame that Slashdot's loose authentication system which is designed to allow people to participate without providing your name, SSN and mother's maiden name like so many other forums is also subject to abuse. Fixes are at hand in the very near future, so don't e-mail, don't call, don't post complaining that Slashdot is going to the dogs -- we're on it. Well, I'm not on it, but you know what I mean. :)

Borland's Interbase Open-Sourced
A slew of people have written in with confirmation that the beta version of Borland's Interbase will be Open Source. This comes on the heels of rampant speculation that this move would be forthcoming. Their press release states they expect to release in the first quarter of 2000. One interesting point is that they are not just opening the code for Linux - the Solaris and WinNT versions will be open as well. However, no mention of what license they plan on using, so I'm sure we'll be revisiting this story. -
JBuilder Foundation is Free - and for Linux
ZioPino writes "JBuilder Foundation is a free, fully functional Java IDE. It's available for download now at the Inprise Web site. This version is 100% Java and runs on Linux, Solaris and Windows. There is also a very cool debugger. " -

Delphi for Linux
Thanks to several readers who wrote to us with the news that Inprise apparently will be porting its Delphi development tool, and others to Linux. This comes on the heels of the recent survey of the Linux developer community. -
Borland/Inprise Linux Survey Results
Ronin Developer writes "Borland has just released the results of their Linux survey. The results are somewhat interesting. Check it out for yourself at: Borland Linux Survey " There's a lot of stuff there about what Linux users say they want (in general, and from Borland) -
Borland Releases Old Turbo C, Turbo Pascal for Free
Geek Boy writes "Borland has released for free on their website, Turbo Pascal v1.0, v3.02 and v5.5, and Turbo C v1.0, v1.5, and v2.01. They also have links to the story of Frank Borland and the "TurboMan" ad from September 1988. " No source code (that would be pretty smooth) but I'm tempted to put Turbo Pascal on my box and see if I can't compile some of my old hacks with dosemu. I wrote a 15,000 line BBS game my soph year of high school... I wonder if I still have a copy. -
Borland Linux Poll: Take Two
A fair number of you probably voted in the recent poll about Borland exploring Linux development. As the other article touched on, they are looking to hire people, and are running a poll to test the waters. However, the prior poll's server got slashdotted, and they missed a lot of people's comments. If you didn't make it at first, head over again and make your voice heard. -
Borland to build JBuilder 3 for Linux
NavySpy writes "Borland (you know, the guys that changed their name to Inprise and now have changed it back) have recently released JBuilder 3. They are releasing the Windows version first, and then are going to do an all-Java version for Solaris, with a follow on version early next year for Linux. You can read more here on borland.com. They also have a free version of Interbase for Linux, so you can put up a full featured DBMS for free. Nice to see a tools developer targeting Linux. " -

Borland Name Change
Bogdan Nicula wrote in to tell us that Borland seems to be changing its name to Inprise. My first compiler was Borland's Turbo Pascal. It was a Christmas present in middle school. Boy I am a geek. Boy that was a long time ago.
