Re:Didn't look so hot in Linux Journal May 08I agree. There are other things in that price range which might be more useful.
I can get a Dell Axim x5 for about the same price, which has faster screen updates and can be used away from the wall socket. I can also get a refurb of a BlackBerry 8700 or a new open box Navman PiN 570 PDA with built-in GPS. If you include specials that are running right now, Geeks.com has a refurbished Axim x51 for $180 or a refurbished Jornada 728 for a few dollars more.
I'm all for the open source angle, the soft shell, and the whole underdog thing, but usefulness is important. -
Time to get a HDTV receiver...
1. Buy a bunch of these
2. Wait for the inevitable resolution of the amendment.
3. ?????
4. Profit! -
My solution that costs less than $5.First, this:
a small notebook for USD$0.75
and
some pencils which can be had for$1.86
Given the amount of energy that goes into making a piece of high technology, and the loss of metals and petroleum to build something that is vastly more toxic to dispose of than paper and pencil, and how little energy goes into making a pencil and small pad of paper, I think it is the height of idiocy to apply such high technology to something that can be just as easily handled with a pencil and paper.
I'll repeat the main point: Get A Small Pad of Paper and a Pencil. A small, all purpose, Swiss army knife is useful for sharpening them, also, small sharpeners are easily found. It will cost you less than $5 and you're set. You can even use parts of it to store important phone numbers and stuff.
Just because something CAN be done with technology doesn't mean it SHOULD be done with technology.
Given the state of the world, I would recommend we get used to such solutions...

Built-in Webcam
What they need is a built-in webcam like Sony's Vaio TR3A, a flippable camera in the top centre of the monitor, and do a full screen live-feed.
Then you'll be able to move the laptop to anywhere and the screen will still look transparent. -
Re:Not the worst, but cmon...
I bought a desktop case with a handle only to realise at a later date that "duh, when do I carry this damn thing?".
to date (6 months later) I've carried it once from the shop to my house, then once from my old house to my new house, a grand total of, ooooh, 200m.
And you just can't put stuff on top. I've got nowhere to keep my remote control t-rex now!
So yeah, I agree. The handle is quite an annoyance. -
