I Blame BSD MallWhen I first heard of BSD Mall I jumped on the chance to "subscribe" to the OpenBSD CD releases, where they automatically charge your card and send you the CD every time one comes out. That worked good for, well, one release (3.5). I never did get my 3.6 or 3.7 CDs from them, despite repeated calls, nor did my colleague who signed up at the same time. I was about to cancel with them when I magically received a 3.8 CD in the mail and a notice explaining how they are under new management. We'll see if my 3.9 CDs actually arrives.
Point being, how much money did OpenBSD lose because BSD Mall couldn't do their jobs?

Re:Variants.
Not yet, but (for some values of deadness) it will soon be available, for example at http://www.bsdmall.com/freebsd1.html

Re:Seriously
BSD mall has some items but it seems they don't have that shirt.

Re:Torrents are your friends:
If you buy a set from BSD Mall they now come with both 2 CDs and a DVD that has all sorts of extra packages on it, for the same price that just the 2 CDs would cost you in the past.

What about BSDi?When they acquired BSDi in April 2001, it was even billed by some as "answering the Linux challenge".
Today one can not find BSDi among WindRiver's products (it used to be there just recently, according to Google, though), and customers in need of support for their earlier bought licenses are requested to contact BSDMall instead.

Re:Wouldn't it be better...
Like BSD mall? Although BSD mall activly contributes to projects for the community, the key here is that ALL profits go to the NetBSD project. The store seems a bit lame if you ask me. A bunch of stuff with the NetBSD flag on it. whee. I'm much more apt to get cute stuff like a more interesting T-shirt

Are toasters allowed?
If NetBSD is allowed, would a toaster do?

Re:Do you guys download Freebsd or buy cd's ?
The various CD's you buy are generally identical to the ISOs you download. If you want to support the project, it is recommended you buy from one of the vendors who supports the project. I have subscriptions with both FreeBSD Mall and BSD Mall (Part of Daemonnews).
Other options are listed in the Handbook.
I definatly recommend downloading rather then buying from people like cheapbytes.

Re:Device driver issue? Now that I think about it, I remembered constantly seeing ads for telephony, etc. cards on BSDMall. I would assume that a card proudly flaunted there would have BSD drivers at least, if not Linux.
This one here lists Linux compatibility.

Other vendors
support the FreeBSD project by purchasing it at a vendor that supports the FreeBSD project.
Other vendors include DaemonNews/BSDMall, and Hinner EDV. -

Re:Attitude problems
Comments on 3) I've been following FreeBSD since 2.2.7 and have never had my FreeBSD reboot for no reason unless there was a hardware problem. I've had my 4.1 box up for over 6 months. I'm sorry, but I know dozens of BSD user and none have had that problem. Perhaps you did have some bad hardware in both you didn't know about.
Of course, FreeBSD doesn't have any precompiled commercial software written for it anyhow...
I'm not sure what kind of comment this is, but FreeBSD has plenty is commercial software writen for it. Check out the bsdmall for a nice selection of them.
Also, to comment on the Linux "emulator." It is really linux compatabilty. They more or less put a loadable kernel module that is the linux kernel. With the compatablity, you need to install all of the linux libraries as such for applications to work. (There is a port to do this.) After this, you just run the linux program and it will run. No need to "play around with it," it just works. Plus, it will run 99.9% of all Linux programs, including VMWare, a very kernel dependant program.
Just thought I get the facts straight. -
Cheaper, faster
You can cut the cost in half by subscribing to one or more operating systems. They also ship subscriptions sooner than ragular orders.

Re:The future
I have it on good authority that Daemon News will be producing FreeBSD 4.5 and giving back to the FreeBSD Foundation. They also have Subscriptions available, so you might want to transfer yours.
