Re:Hardware firewalldo it with a SFF or Mini-ITX form factor, that problem dissapears.
Mmmm... no. It becomes managable. However, even an 8x8x12 system is noticably larger than the Airport Extreme, or the SMC Barricade someone mentioned (even after adding a RS232).I can usually get any PC or Mac up enough to talk to the net with gear that fits into half of a CaseLogic 64 CD case (the drivers, OSes, &c take up the other half) and a Yum Cha USB/Firewire box, provided that CPU, motherboard, and memory are OK. So, adding even a SFF/Mini-ITX will more than double the size of the pile I need to carry. Maybe I'll get an OQO. =)
Mind you, connecting can be a bit of a challenge, and it's been a pain to find all of the gear (EG, a small USB modem with both Mac and PC drivers), but it does make housecalls easier-- and it's mindboggling what you can get away with when you're a techie who makes housecalls.

Re:Store discs in binders
For truly large (and changing) CD collections, to me the only way to go is sleeves. I've been using these things for many years now... I own around 900 CDs, and they all fit in a small space in my closet inside sleeves inside plastic containers, including liner notes.

Luggage.
Case Logic makes a very nice rolling computer case. Good for airports too, but I've always got about 20 pounds of crap in there.
Let me take a look:
-------------
Laptop
Power supply
12V inverter
digital camera
recycled AOL tin of useful CD's
lots of paper
passport
checkbook
backup money
Euro plug adapter
extra network PCMCIA card
cell phone
phone charger (USB)
phone charger (120V)
phone headset
USB cable
Badge for work
Icebreakers mints
the OpenGL redbook

Case Logic CD Album pages + 3 ring binders
Here's how I do it:
* Standard 3-ring binders (label them according to how you would like to sort your CD's.. by function, alpha-numeric, or both).
* Case Logic Album pages.
- 8 cd's per page (double sided)
Here's the link: Case Logic Album pages.
I think the price is reasonable, and keeps them very accessible, uses little space. -
Re:Yeah but the P.O. costs one HELL of a lot more!
$7?
This sounds like the old George Bush guessing that a gallon of milk cost $9.
A mini-cd can fit in a small envelope, and weighs in under the 1-ounce, meaning only 1 stamp needed. A full size cd can fit safely in a padded envelope and mail at under $1.
For $3.95 you can send anything that fits into a priority box/envelope. You can probably fit 40 cd's in there.
Never send jewel cases either, just use sleeves
I've been mailing cd-r's with mp3 albums for a long time, and the postage isn't that bad until you start looking at over seas trades. -
Re:plastic?
You can also get the NC Shuttle from CaseLogic, which is a bit cheaper ($17).

3 ring binders
Bantha poodoo. Get some of these 3 ring notebook pages, and use a bookshelf. Much prettier and denser than storing in those stupid jewel cases. I've got about 800 CDs currently housed in 3 or 4 feet of shelf space. The 3ring solution is cheaper, too.

Case Logic
I find that the standard Case Logic nylon cases to be the perfect balance of portability, density, protection, and durability. I have three of the 208-disc capacity models. (The 256 and 264 models are a little too bulky for me.) The faux-leather ones just seem a little weird for my tastes, and any hard-shelled cases I've seen seem too prone to breakage.
They hold liner notes well, but of course that halves the capacity, but I find it worth it. The one that holds my CD-ROMs has just discs in it, though.

CD changers and huge wallets
It depends how frequently you used the CDs. Also, if you're toting them around to different computers on the same netowork, or you need constant access to many different CDs, check out: dvdchanger.com these 200 disk CD/DVD changers range from $1000 to $6000. The things are REALLY cool, go check out the specs (anyone know how to build your own?)
If you're wooking for a CD wallet sorta thing, check out: Case Logic Nylon Case We use these at my work, we have well over 1000 CDs stored in these things. They work beautifully.
