quote of the day
That's great. I made it a quote of the day on my site, caution, inc.
Too bad I used up all my mod points today, cause you'd have gotten them. -
Re:An observation...
I have noticed the same thing. The only time I get viruses at my home address is when I need to go update my grandmother's virus protection & clean her machine. But lately she's either learned how to do it herself (very possible) or learned not to blindly click on attachements (yah, right).

Re:Oh yeah
Person1: Exactly what is wrong with having the browser be part of the OS? It does OS-like things in a very natural way, and you have the advantage of using the same tool to browse the internet that you use to browse your hard drive.
Person2: My "objection" is not that the browser is part of the OS. My objection is that Internet Explorer is the browser.
My problem isn't with that, my problem is people who bitch about the integration of IE & Win. If you don't like it, don't buy it. Period. Use a different OS, I did. But Microsoft produces Windows. They shouldn't be told what they can & can't do with it. If you don't like the way they do it, make your own OS. Groovy, yeah. But the whole topic isn't even worthy of me finishing this post...

Wasn't the whole point to Wolfenstein to run around and kill a bunch of Nazis? We need the swastikas to know who to kill...

Re:I mean, really...
what is it with IT people and refridgerators??
I'll tell you what it is. A big, flat surface that is begging for a flatscreen. Plus, you already plug your fridge into AC. Most people don't have power running to their cabinets. That's the one thing that hit me as soon as I read your post. I'm sure there are many other reasons...

Re:Who would've thought?
Yeah, you forgot about yahoo.com. Oh, and slashdot.org. What the hell is a slashdot? Most of the names you listed don't seem too bad, even zoza.com. *If* they had worked out, they'd be instantly recognizable. Since they didn't work out, we can now ridicule them...

Opt-out isn't a problem...
The problem I have is when you "opt-out", only to have the mail bounced due to an invalid email address, presumably due to spam from the account. Or if you end up on a Japanese spam list, and the email & all linked pages are unreadable by non-linguists, so you *can't* opt-out.

Re:Only one color?
For $8,000 - $10,000 I'd like to see RGB lasers painting triplets on the backs of my eyes. And I do mean eyeS, I want stereoscopic projectors so I can get 3D images.
No, that model will run you $500k according to the article. But will be available commercially in the form of stylish sunglasses in ~5 yrs. :)

Not only do you have checksums & what-not, but most encrypted data has lower compression ratios, so that adds to the bandwidth as well.

Re:Biased sites insult our intelligence. The disturbing thing is there are an inordinate number of users who would do just that. See how convenient the web is? I can learn about the best hardware and buy it on the same page! Oh, Boy! Wait a minute, this would never fly outside the online world. Go to a computer store and ask the sales 'consultant' what to buy, then he hands it to you and you fork over the green. There's an idea. Oh, and while you're at it, you might as well bend over and grab your ankles.
Actually, most people (non-techies) *do* go to the store & ask what's the best thing, then buy it. My grandmother did that when she wanted a new PC (and to stop using me for tech support). She went to Gateway Country & talked to the sales ppl. I reviewed her purchase & while I felt they oversold her (p3-700 for websurfing & email, some scanning), the price wasn't horrendous & she's been extremely happy with it. Were the Gateway sales ppl biased? Without a doubt. Did she care? No.

Re:Lynx on C=64
My first computer was a C=64, and my first internet account was a dial-up to a VMS box at the university. I had Lynx access all I wanted. Of course, most of the sites back then were text only, so graphics support wasn't too necessary.

Re:ironic
I just recently installed Debian on my 3400c. It was on the supported list, but just barely. Most of the difficulties were due to the barely compatible OF, and boot methods. I doubt seriously that any pretty install they have will work on it, but if you setup bootx or something similar you should be able to get to the ugly install...

Actually, if I'm not mistaken there is Metaframe for Solaris now... I'm not sure about the Solaris version, but I know one big advantage over the Win Terminal Server is the protocol used w/ Metaframe. I use both & Metaframe has much better speed.

Re:Inflated damage numbers
>So if someone steals a packet of M&Ms from the local grocery store, and the grocery store conducts a full review and decides to hire a $20/hour security guard, spend $1500 installing cameras and a closet-circuit TV system, and install a checkpoint at the candy aisle, that shoplifter caused tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage?
No, but that's not a good analogy. A better one is that someone broke into the supposedly locked & secured office, opened the safe & stole a money wrapper.

Re:Some questions I have about this
Would it even need to be rewritable? Most tech comes out initially w/ read-only/write once (CD, DVD) drives, with recorders or rerecorders (I guess that should ahve been rewriters) priced way out of reach for Joe Schmoe. But the prices come down & they become readily available. Besides, what was it? 10tb? With that kind of space you'd rarely *need* to erase anything.

Re:Sorry
Since I was recently lucky enough to score (inadvertantly, it was next in the queue) a xxx 666 (the xxx were actual letters) license plate, maybe I should switch to BSD. I'm thinking of painting a huge devil on the back, it can be the bsdmobile:)

Re:Rights
Hmm. I ripped my entire CD collection & burned onto mp3 CDs. That way I only have to carry 10 CDs instead of all of them. I also have them sorted by music type, so if I feel like some old school punk, I can slip that disc in & not have to skip the unwanted tracks.

Re:Pinball Maintainance
I worked in an arcade for 3 yrs., way back before I was into computers. I will say that the pinball maintainance was one of the "chores" that no one liked. It wasn't that difficult if you had an ounce of common mechanical/electrical sense, but it was extremely time consuming. Mostly the cleaning & waxing the deck. It had to be done at least twice a week, and could take up to an hour for each machine. The video games were easier, but required replacement parts more often. The joysticks & buttons on the video games received a lot more use/abuse than the pinball machines. Surprisingly enough, most people who play pinball machines are affectionadoes (sp?), and respect them, and therefor tend to treat them a little nicer.

Re:8-hour sleep day
New guidelines must be set for how much IT workers can be forced to work without sleep. In the footsteps of pioneers of the 10-hour work day of the nineteenth century, we must today pioneer the 8-hour sleep day.
Uh, no thanks. However much I might wish to get more sleep (I only work 8hrs, but spend after-work time with my daughter, which leaves 9pm-> for me), I don't need anyone telling me how much sleep I *have* to get. That's my decision & my choice.

Re:I will bet large sums...
Maybe not. I haven't seen anywhere that their pricing is based on subscription discounts. I've seen ~$600 bandied around here (though I couldn't find it at Gateway), which would fit with the "you bought it" scenario. There's no reason for them to cripple the machine or attempt to make it non-hackable. I haven't seen any Gateway PCs with epoxy covering the board, etc.

Ethernet available
According to gateway.com, there will be an optional ethernet port. Which bumps this little device up from "who cares" to "cool, could be interesting". Of course, that's just assuming the smarter-than-me folk will figure out how to customize the OS. Blah, blah, I'd like to see it as an Xterm...

None of the Above
I registered to vote after 10 yrs. of refusing. I figure that even if I can't find a candidate that I can support, I can write in "none of the above". Personally I think that should be an option on *all* ballots. If NOTA gets the majority, the election has to be held again, with none of the original candidates being eligible.
That being said, Go Harry Browne!!! :-)

I've already implemented IPv7 on my LAN. It's really cool, all devices connected via IPv7 are automagically added to a Beowolf cluster. Even your toaster.

Teenagers *always* appear dumber when you are no longer one of them. It's a law or something:) But think (and be honest) about what you were like when you were a teenager. I'm not quite as likely now to warm up a pot of gasoline on the stove so I can make napalm. Seems quite stupid, in fact. I'm sure it was Paul's idea... Damn. When you get old you start to ramble.

Re:Benefit of the doubt
Ok, I didn't really read the article. Mainly because I barely care about who said what (sticks & stones). I generally regard Redhat to be "that upstart Linux company that will be the next MS". But if this is accurately quoted:
>They only quoted seven words from Tiemann:
>"We did start the open-source revolution"
Then I'd just about have to agree. He's not saying they invented the internet (yet), just the revolution. And not many people knew about Linux & Open Source before Redhat "legitimized" it. Once again, the parallels between RH & MS are scary, but maybe I'm just pessimistic...
