Re:A cost equation
Huh, neat. According to this, the building was completed in 1955. A comment further down says the windows were switched out because the inflatable rubber molding that held them in place eventually deteriorated and they were replaced in '97-98.
With half a century of materials and engineering improvements since then, I should think that that kind of problem could be fixed or an alternative created. My thought when making my post was clamps that would either pull back or swing away.

Re:Boo-hoo!
obPedant: It's Wacker Drive, not Wall Street. Completely different city, too.

Re:ya know why?
that's also the difference between the world of walmart, and the world of macys....
Sorry... you misspelled Marshall Field's . (People in Chicago get this joke.)
Sorry... you misspelled Foley's . (People in Houston get this one.) -

Just three off the top of my head. Just because you have a very narrow internet experience doesn't mean everyone else does.
In fact, the Houston .info link above is the number one Google result for the query Houston Architecture, so at least Google understands there's more to the internet than .com. -
Re:Cell Phone Towers & Light Pollution
The color and type of the lights on all structures in the U.S. are determined by their height and their proximity to flight paths. In the mathematical formulas, sometimes even a few dozen meters can make all the difference.
For example, Chicago's CBD is in the flight path of O'Hare airport. Very often planes trying to take advantage of a wind off the lake will fly between the 1,730-foot (to the tip of the mast) Sears Tower and the 1,500-foot (to the tip of the mast) John Hancock Center (fly between in terms of horizontal position, not altitude). Both have twin masts with flashing white strobes during the day. But at night the Hancock Center switches to red LEDs while Sears, with its taller height, retains the white strobes. -

Re:Sirius sucks
Here in Wisconsin XM radio (my dad has it in his car) dies anytime there is any sort of obstruction
Those of us who live in civilization get great satellite radio reception because there are terrestrial repeaters in urban areas. I'm four blocks from the Sears Tower in Chicago, and the Sirius reception is fantastic. I've been told there's a Sirius repeater up there. In fact, the reception is so good that I actualy have my antenna wadded up in a bundle of wires behind my stereo nowhere near the window, and I still get three out of three bars. I bet those people in the Amazon.com reviews who are complaining about the bad reception they get from their XM MyFi's probably live in the hinterland, as well.
I did 18 months in Oshkosh, Wisconsin and another year in Green Bay. Now that I live in the city, I really understand why people live in the city. Improved radio reception is one of those many benefits. -
Batman Begins filming locations
They filmed some scenes for Batman Begins last week in one of the north suburbs of Chicago -- scenes involving the Batmobile.
Next week, they begin filming more scenes from the movie in my building !
According to the notice we got from the landlord, they're going to do some inside scenes, and some stunts involving helicopters.

Re:SuburbiaInterestingly enough, the designer of this building had that in mind. Didn't seem to affect retail values on Michigan Avenue very much.
