Re:Mapping!
Not OSS, or even free, but Terrabrowser sounds exactly like what you're looking for. $15, cheap enough, esp. for a Mac program. It's a sweet program, I use it a lot for USGS data, and I just purchased a GPS interface and I'm looking forward to trying it out.

Re:Garmin GPS over USB?
I've got my Garmin Vista talking to my OS X box via a Keyspan USB to serial cable and run the freeware GPS Connect and its shareware big brother Terrabrowser to upload and download waypoints.

Re:replacement for Terraformer
Might you possibly mean TerraBrowser? Yes, the images are outdated but it's still fascinating to look at terrain you know today as it appeared over a decade ago. A little like flying around in a time machine.

Re:All working fine here..
if you don't need all the features of MacStumbler, you can try the very nice AP Grapher to track signal strength.

Re:Try changing the channel
If you have an Apple, check out AP grapher for OSX
They have links to other stuff as well, and also the Apple headers - so you could develop your own too... But this is good stuff for looking at Wireless links... -
Re:Compatibility?
There is no GPS software that works on a Mac... Riight...
