Gish Shows Odd Physics-Based Indie Platforming Flair
Thanks to Gamers With Jobs for its group review of Chronic Logic's PC "physics-based [2D] platform game" Gish, which was briefly mentioned on Slashdot Games earlier this week. The reviewers seem impressed, arguing: "Gish is one of the few 'modern' platformers I can think of. What I mean is that it actually uses modern technology to enhance the gameplay, instead of making prettier versions of NES games", and highlighting "the spectacular physics engine, which they use to full effect in the puzzles and enemies." The article also points to a downloadable demo of the product, as well as a recent interview with the creators, in which Gish's developers, Chronic Logic, "the crew behind the acclaimed Bridge Builder/Pontifex series", are further quizzed. -

Indie Gaming Gets 2004 Mid-Term Grades
Thanks to Game Tunnel for its 2004 mid-term report card on the independent PC gaming scene, rating what "is turning out to be one of the most impressive years yet in the Indie world." Among the approved-of titles include action games such as Hamsterball ("a wonderful surprise that plays a lot like Marble Madness would play [if updated]"), platform adventures such as Gish ("[starring] a ball of tar [whose] goal is to find his girlfriend who was taken down... the sewer"), before looking forward to interesting hopefuls that include Oasis ("takes all the strategy of a game like Civilization and then turns it into a 3 minute experience.") -
Conflict On Graphic Standards Hurting PC Gaming?
Thanks to GameSpot for their editorial discussing graphics card manufacturers, and how their race for revenue could harm PC gaming. The piece discusses the days when "3dfx's Glide standard was the only thing going", and "3dfx even secured deals with retailers to create separate sections for 3dfx-compatible games." However, the author laments: "I thought hardware-specific games were a thing of the past. Then I booted up the demo for Bridge It", an Nvidia-sponsored title which "will not run unless you have an Nvidia GeForce 4 Ti or GeForce FX graphics card installed." The article ends with a hope that "clearer heads will prevail and PC gaming can take new steps toward improving ease-of-use, not balkanizing the platform for business reasons." -
Bridge Building Games Explored
Thanks to DIYGames for their review of Bridge Construction Set, the "the second game in the hit engineering simulation series" from Chronic Logic and Garage Games. There are Windows and Linux demos available for this title, which lets you "...design and build bridges, and then stress test them [with trains and other vehicles] to see how your creations hold up under pressure", and there's even an independent fansite, BridgeBuilder-Game.com, which bills itself as "the ultimate bridge builder game website", and deals with the original Bridge Builder and Pontifex games, as well as the forthcoming Bridge It!, which sports much more impressive graphics thanks to the Auran Jet 3D engine. -
