Re:totally impractical
I thought the record for a Citroën AX was 87mpg. Their own company website states 78.5mpg highway, 55.4mpg city. And if those are imperial gallons, you need to reduce it (they don't state what kind of gallons). And I don't know about in Europe, but US mpg ratings have been lowered from what they were in the 90s to reflect more real-world driving conditions.

Re:seems sort of a waste
Many new European diesel cars have Particle Filter systems built in.

Re:Kidz! What is a DS ?
That's funny, I thought they stopped making the DS in 1975...

Yeah, it does look like a Citreon D-series...
...only double-exposed.
Take this one, for example, mirror it horizontally and clone the wheels. Look familiar? (-: -
Not amazing.
Citroen did this 40 years ago, with a purely mechanical system. The hydraulic suspension that "real" Citroens have was even adopted, in a seriously compromised form, for Rolls-Royce cars. There is a good site explaining it here (warning - garish animated GIF).

This is hardly revolutionary...
Erm... a system just as good as this, if not superior to it, has been around for quite a while, and in its current generation will do everything that this BOSE system does; most probably better. And this is based technology that has been around since the early 50s, with major changes only being introduced in the last 10 years or so.

Re:get a new car company or get some smarts.
Well my company only has a single smart car but I can tell you they are not a lot better in doing personaly maintaning them. Most parts are closed, you can't really do anything on the car yourself that gets your hands greasy. It even has not got a spare tire (that's optional and there's not too much space for it). It does save a bundle on road taxes though. (In my country we have road taxes based on the weight, age and fuell type of your car)
Same sort of recurring problem we had with a diesel Citroen Berlingo car. Engine light kept comming back up, but the place we bought it checked it out a couple of times for free, and the last time they replaced some coil or something not sure, was a two digit price.
Another option would be to stay away from those new type of cars with all the problems you have, and be quite independant of where you get it fixed. Before the berlingo we had a C15 and for instance now I drive a 1967 Citroen DS Pallas, and sure, it does have it's own sort of problems, I have plenty of choice where to get those fixed. (Even so, the Citroen dealerships/stealerships do not know anything about those anymore) -

Joystick control...
... is nothing new. I genuinely feel sorry for people in the US. It seems you don't have Citroens over there. Consider that the Citroen XMs and Xantias are the only "consumer" car with active hydraulic suspension as standard. Lovely soft ride, into a corner, suspension stiffens up. Great stuff. They have produced some of the most distinctive and technologically advanced cars in the world. Volvo's swivelling headlights? Citroen SM, in the late 1960s/early 1970s. Dynamic roll control? Prototyped on the DS and ID in 1967 or so, but didn't see production use until the Xantia Activa in 1995.
Get a Citroen. You'll like it.
