You can't get much earlier than "Chips and Dips", and you can also get some insight into Taco, the Man, instead of Taco, the Commander...

So here are some screenshots for your enjoyment:

Taco's first e theme, Flaunt. It was designed for 1600x1200, and DR11. And boy, if you don't see "Chips and Dips" right there on his screen. Talk about a little self-promotion!

And what else do we have? We have his DR12 theme, Obsidian! Obsidian features a few irc chats here and there, and we get to see taco lurking (as an op no less) in #linuxwarez. Woo!

We also find out that, originally, his themes were hosted at mandrake.net, in the "TacoWare" directory on the ftp. Hmmmmmm. TacoWare. I think we have a competitor for the Dilberito!

Congrats guys, it's good to see all the progress that's been made.

They will need a lot of help.

The Linux Documentation Project will need all the help it can get; this at the moment can only be an uphill struggle. Linux software development is undoubtedly at its most prolific it has ever been so as soon as something is documented; it will have been revised (something that LDP have taken note of)
It seems therefore that the only way to win this is to increase the manpower available and signup to help...

I emplore /. readers who have knowledge and experience of related issues to get involed (get their keyboard dirty) and be part of the big picture :)
Linuxdoc.org has already proved invaluble to me so I will be doing whatever I can.....

We will take special care in the future to prevent this from happening, as we know that most people on Slashdot cannot tell the difference between facts, opinions, lies, and FUD.

There's another interesting artical about wireless phones and linux here.

Ok, I realise that this is probably more than a little off topic, but I had a stroke of briliance!!

Ok, here's the deal: most of us have seen Rob's Hamster Havoc animation, right? Well wouldn't it be cool to make this into a game? You could use the whole "sphere-walking-idea" as the user interface, but you'd use your arms too! The resistance on how hard it is to rotate the sphere could be controled by motors that work against you (like a motor that runs a rubber wheel that makes it harder (or imposible) to go in certain directons). This would be great for simulating all sorts of terrains IE: grass, cement, enclines, etc -- hell, if you get going up a ramp that's too steep then they could start spinning the ball against you and make you roll backwards.

If they decided to go a bit crazy with this they could make the walls of the sphere be a screen that displays your surroundings -- and they could use hydrolics to shake the sphere to make it feel more real.

Ok, I've had my rant -- I'll go take my medicine now.

And as I'm about to post this, I believe that I remember seeing something like this on that American Gladiators show.... whatever

From the article, you'd think that the only people who care about politics are "Tech Bosses" who have enough money to lobby politicians with. Perhaps its just that The Economist think its perfectly acceptable that politics is only who can buy which politicians and why... thats not democracy, its an indictment against the corruption in our political system.

The competing interests they talk about are the competing interests of corporations. How it could ever seriously talk about small nimble companies and the death of big business has got to be some kind of joke. Faster than the Federal government (with continually increasing powers and budget) can bust trusts and monopolies, are they not combining into larger and larger corporations.

About the only thing Big that they were right about getting small is Big Unions. This is largely their own damn fault, becaused they stopped being unions that fought on the job and became political machines, lobbying groups and pension/insurance plans. And, suprise, they never have the money to buy politicians like corporations can. Which is ultimately why efforts like Washtech are doomed as long as they try and compete with corporate money in electoral politics. Ofcourse, anti-democratic practices, corruption, organized crime, capital flight to the third world (GATT, NAFTA and the WTO), and being outmoded by new technology have heart Big Labor alot.

If unions are to ever work for geeks, they've got to be portable, decentralized, democratic, focus on direct action (instead of electoral lobbying), free (like in speech, not beer) and of a generally anti-authoritarian/libertarian culture. They've got to be willing to fight over issues like censorship (remember when the Web turned black against the CDC?), privacy, spam, standards, accessiblity, etc... I only know of couple humble attempts at that.

The complete cyberpunk fake book has a better hold on geek politics than the Economist. Fringe parties... if geeks are in parties are all... are like the Libertarians and the Greens. The number of out right anarchists growing in the industry is pretty astounding.

Most geeks don't identify themselves with any particularly ideology (and certainly not any party). They have a patchwork of issues they care about, if they vote registere independent or which ever party has dominance so they'll have a better choice during primaries. Political geeks would rather take action, or support their local communities, in the streets. If geeks want to get rid of propietary software, they out evolve it, they don't try and lobby it away; Anarchism Triumphant! If they think corporations have bought up to much radio spectrum, they help people take the airwaves back from FCC sellout. Or take out satellites.

But none of these things are politics, as far as The Economist is concerned. But then, civil disobedience is pretty hard to buy off.

When geeks start applying what they are already doing on other issues to work... then you'll really begin to see something. Syndicalism might get a rebirth for the new millenium yet.

IIRC Slashdot uses Adfu, Rob's open source ad server. When Andover took over Adfu when they picked up Slashdot so Andover might still be liable. In other words, yes the ads are run on Slashdot servers so we should all contact Andover and ask them to burn the GIFs! Actually, we should talk to Rob, because he would probably still be in charge of Adfu itself and would be the one who'd have to rewrite the script.

Looks like "flipz" is more than just a script kiddie: attrition lists her as having cracked jpl, duracell, people's bank, a bunch of .mils, department of veteran affairs and some other stuff. http://www.attrition.org/mirror/attrition/flipz.ht ml

  The sites weren't all that high security. Oooh, the "US Army Dental Care System" computer was compromized, while it is in the .mil hierarchy, I doubt that much effort went into securing it.

    The problem is that if a single .mil/.gov/etc site is compromised, there is the distinct possibility that other sites can be compromised. Simple example: many .mil sites only allow access to "public" web pages from other .mil sites. The same goes for .edu and .gov sites... The path to a final destination is much shorter than from "the big bad internet"... Another simple scenario would be if although THAT machine was not "secured" since it has nothing of importance on it, there is a slight posssibility that the machine is on a network segment that in turn has access to another segment that DOES have material that may be valuable to someone else...
    
    
    
    BTW: The above scenario is exactly why many "high security" sites do not allow employees to have "important" material even on their normal day-to-day office machines..

Another non-functioning site was "uncertainty.microsoft.com." The purpose of that site was not known.

Whatever it was, that name doesn't seem to resolve anymore. I guess they must be covering their tracks for now, because fear.microsoft.com and doubt.microsoft.com also don't resolve. :-)

  Personally, I don't see much difference between the "new" (web page) crackers and the "old" (copy protection) crackers. Both require basic assembly knowledge, and the ability to use a debugger. And lots and lots and lots and lots of time on your hands. Obviously I am ignoring those amazing buffer overruns exploits where people manage to get code in through a function that strips out all characters but '9' 'a' and 'q', but your average exploit is not that impressive an achievement. Nor is your average software crack. I fully expect to be flamed by the script kiddies and the h4x0r groupies. Please at least attempt to keep it coherent.

He's talking about hand-held radar systems police can use to detect breathing, beating hearts or other motion through walls and other obstacles. Sounds like a declassified version of the Ground Support Radar [GSR] units we used years ago in the Army. So here it is: A mirror of Slashdot (as of a week or so ago). It exists now for testing: So feel free to post comments and help test the new load balancer. For the curious, the new system has 3 http machines (P2s) and one mysql box (a dual P2) with a load balancer trying to keep everyone all equally busy. And its about time: the old setup has been really stressed out trying to keep up with everyone. Anyway, don't get to attached to any of your comments here, when we're satisfied that the new setup is stable, I'm gonna mirror over Slashdot and make the final switcheroo.

So here it is: A mirror of Slashdot (as of a week or so ago). It exists now for testing: So feel free to post comments and help test the new load balancer. For the curious, the new system has 3 http machines (P2s) and one mysql box (a dual P2) with a load balancer trying to keep everyone all equally busy. And its about time: the old setup has been really stressed out trying to keep up with everyone. Anyway, don't get to attached to any of your comments here, when we're satisfied that the new setup is stable, I'm gonna mirror over Slashdot and make the final switcheroo.

Bram writes "Just found an article about another way to invade privacy." He's talking about hand-held radar systems police can use to detect breathing, beating hearts or other motion through walls and other obstacles. Sounds like a declassified version of the Ground Support Radar [GSR] units we used years ago in the Army. I can see why police would want them, and I can also see why Bram considers them a privacy threat. Depends on how they're used, I suppose.

First off, finding any site(s) without banner ads of some sort is nearly impossible these days. Internet connectivity isn't free. Web hosting isn't free either -- and don't even get me started on those "free" sites that do nothing but litter one's desktop with ads...

/. is (or was) a hobby site. As such, do you honestly expect people to fork out their (hard earned?) cash for redundant, "it will never go down", high availablity hardware? If you do, then you should seek professional help.

Let us do some math in reference to banner ads and "hobby sites"...

Let's make a few assumptions (alright, ALOT of assumptions.) Say your hobby site is fairly popular getting 100k hits per day with an average transfer of 8k per hit. <math> 100000 * 8 / (60 * 60 * 24) == 9.26K/s</math> That's assuming the traffic is perfectly evenly distributed -- which we all know isn't true.

To continuously transmit 9.26K/s would require a 128k connection. A standard analog modem tops out in the 3K/s range. A single ISDN B channel tops out at 7.5K/s. A dual channel ISDN (2B) or 128k frame connection tops out at 15.2K/s. Let's assume you go with ISDN (it's generally the lower cost.)
SO, you'd need an ISDN router (the first person to say "ISDN Modem" gets shot) at a cost of 700$US, an ISDN phone line at a cost of 100$US/month and 200$US installation, and an ISP at a cost of 150$US/month plus 200$US installation (what a rip-off.) That's 1100$US to start plus 250$US per month for your "hobby"... and you haven't even bought a machine to be your web server.

Seeing as no one is being charged for access to /., no one has a leg to stand on if/when it fails. Face it, machines break. I think the /.'ers put more than enough of their time and money into making this geek haven. If you cannot get your /. fix, then that should be taken as an omen to get (back) to work.

From megaer beginings it grew to be quite a popular net hotspot. We've won lots of awards and we serve up hundreds of thousands of pages each day. My time is now fully consumed with running this beast. To make that a reality, myself, and a few friends created a company called BlockStackers Inc. Slashdot is the first real product from our company, but Everything- our distributed database and AdFu, our banner ad server are both coming into their own as entertaining projects. Now if they make money or not, that remains to be seen.
