Right. Another reason to ban firearms.
But here are a bunch of reasons why we should keep them:

http://observer.guardian.co.uk/international/story /0,6903,1136440,00.html (Gas chamber horror in North Korea camps) ... ...
Of course I could go on and on and on and cite every massacre and mass murder on the planet but that's what happens in the end to people who are not armed. -
Tiannamen proof and photos - It didn't happen?????
What reality were *you* in in 1989? Were you even thought of yet? I mean... I *witnessed* the tanks, I saw the blood - albiet on television. And yet, you cite the Almighty Wikipedia. How funny are you? Do you *really* think that in this day and age, you would find useful information about Tiannamen?

Re:The Blame
Perhaps you want "someone" not "something", but what if you don't agree with them? Frankly that's the part of problem with conventional media - biased, corporate-bought, dumbed-down pundits acting as gatekeepers.
Which is why individual news sites should not be singled out for higher ranking. Rather, sites that fit within a classification should be given higher ranking for general reliability. Ignoring the not-so-recent scandals in which journalistic integrity was violated, these are the sites with the most relevant information about our times.
And to be clear, I don't imagine the "news channel" classification as being limited to the NYT, SFChron, SJMerc, etc. I also see it applied to Al-Jazeera, CND.org, Lima Post, and even LCI.
Ok, maybe not that last one...

Re:wait, you want to *not* sell them something?
Japanese regime that was busy raping, murdering, and sacking China.
I believe you are referring to the Nanjing Massacre -
Re:Internet Free Asia? There is a service called "Radio Free Asia" that is somewhat parallel to RFE.
Beware that uncensored does not always mean "unbiased" -- I'm sure the RFA people have their own goals. If you want to help with the internet, I think setting up some type of proxy server would probably be your best bet. Tunneling, encrypted, etc, it'd be convenient. There used to be a service at CND that let you type in URLs like http://proxy.cnd.org/www.cnn.com and it'd give you cnn. Good stuff.

my experiences, part 1(disclosure, IANACN (I am not a Chinese national))
There's a lot of stuff going on in China right now, a lot.
Xiagang (off of post)
Tons of people have been laid off by SOE (state owned enterprises), and don't have a viable source of income. This people are were the bulk of the current unrest is coming from (protests in small cities, usually not heard of in the western media).
Liumin (migrant workers)
Lots of people are moving from the countryside to find work in the big cities/coastal areas. They live in pretty crappy situations, and work crazy hours at construction sites or in factories.
wang ba (internet "bar"/cafe)
When I last visited (a bit more than a year ago), even relatively small cities (on the order of Portland or Omaha(?)) had a good chance of having an internet bar. Lots of college students had web access (although often just access to internal Chinese sites -- because it costs more money to access international lines). China has 1.x billion people, most are in the coutryside. Most don't use computers. Even with 15 million internet users, that's hardly more than a percent or 2. Thing will change fast, but I don't think that the average farmer is going to be surfing for a long, long time.
News sites
Voices of Chinese has China headlines from lots of newspapers both US and Chinese.
China News Digest an old volunteer run news site.
China Online mainly economic/finance news.
Inside China political news
Good book
River Town talks about a man's experiences in teaching English in rural China. Very, very insightful stuff about what the non-big city/coastal life is like.
Damn, I'll probably post more later on tonight -- I didn't get into what I think the Chinese are thinking about, etc, but I'll get to it.
Lastly: I'm really sick of china-haters on slashdot. There's a lot of problems about China, but there are really no easy solutions.
