Blitzkrieg Server
M. Bockol sent us An Entertaining CNN Story where you can read about new technology that you can use to stop (h|cr)ackers. Basically, it detects someone trying to get in, and sends a pulse down the wire to destroy the intruder. I hope you are amused by this as I am. -
Redux of the Apollo Mission
This story was just too cool to pass up. This satellite was crippled in space, and was written off by the company. However, Hughes, with the US Air and Space Command, NASA and others, are going to try and slingshot it around the Moon, to get it back into orbit later this year, making it the first time since the 1970s anyone has sent anything around the Moon, and the first ever commerical usage like this. Things like this make me get up in the morning. -
AOL dismissed as defendant
America Online has been officially dismissed as a defendant in the Matt Drudge lawsuit. A White House advisor is suing for 20$US million in defamation damages. In a good news for other hosting sites, the dismissal was that "Internet service providers are not accountable for content supplied to them by third parties." This is good news for places like us, and others of our ilk, freeing us to a certain degree from being sue-able, because trust me here, Rob and I don't have the cash to sustain any sort of lawsuit. We would prefer mud-wrestling as a way to settle the arguement. -
NSA Hackers find Pentagon wide open
Alfred Landrum sent us this article and says "Around 50 NSA hackers gained crazy access to DOD computers across the country, as part of a security test. -
Assorted Tidbits
Each of these is pretty important and probably warrents its own post, buuut we've had a ton of articles posted already today, and these are pretty notable, so: I)ruid asked me to plug C Scene, a nice little E-zine devoted to C and C++ programming. Chris Short sent us this link where you can read the results of a shocking government study:After much research (and spending of tax payers money) they confirm that the web is growing! Wow. Amazing.Andy Tai wrote in to tell us that another Open Source web site has arrived, this one is The Open Source Journal. Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed that there are suddenly dozens of web sites focused on this stuff? It seems like a lot of duplication of effort is occuring. I'm all for variety, but a dozen decent sites could combine forces to create one super site.
Next, Adam Keys wrote in to tell us that Apple Posted a $55 million profit this quarter. Lastly we have this link, sent to us by Dave Blondell, where you can read about Linux at Comdex 98, and a few other related Chicago/Spring Comdex area events.

New Gov. estimates about IT
CNN has published a nice article, with some auxilary links about the growth of the information and technology segment of the US economy. New government estimates have come out about the role and size of IT in the government, and we are getting bigger and better. My favorite quote: "In many ways, information technology drives the US economy." -

School Pays $30k in Web Page Lawsuit
Jim Efaw wrote in to give me an article that brings satisfaction to me. Remember the articles floating around the last few months about the kid who was suspended for posting stuff about his Band Teacher on his web page? Well a judge has ordered an end to the suspension, and paid him $30k to drop the lawsuit against the school. I can't believe someone could feel justified in doing that, and I'm pleased to see resolution. More details here. -
PC on a Chip
Dwight Schauer wrote in to tell us about National Semiconductor Corp and their $500 PC on a chip. I'm still not sure that this is the way to go, but it'll definately be nice for those low end low cost machines that I occasionally have to recommend to some inept friend. Check it out here. -
SPAMnet Coming Soon
hakker writes "Time to break out the DOS attacks again? Maybe. Sanford Wallace is going to reveal an "All Spam Network." He says that his network will give ISP's the option of allowing or disallowing email from his network. It is an interesting article, especially where Wallace's partner Rines is quoted as saying "You just can't force stuff down people's throats." Read it here" -
California Moves Towards Spam Ban
Alan Liu wrote in to send us This CNN Article Where you can read about CA moving towards passing laws against Spam. I guess it's only a matter of time before Spamming becomes prosecutable enough that people will stop. I hope. Please? -
Electronic Stamps
Ryan Kirkpatrick wrote in to give us this link to a CNN article that talks about how you can now print stamps on your computer if you have an internet feed, and (ahem) windows. But it's still pretty cool, and will be much cooler when we have cross platform support. -
Analyzer Busted
CNN is running this article where you can read that the US and Israeli govt have caught Analyzer, the hacker who made the recent pentagon computer break ins happen. I'm kind of surprised they caught him. This related story was sent in by Jon Shiring who says "The author is pretty much trying to offer a hint of truth to all the media hype about evil hackers. Nothing new, just nice to hope that average people might read this. " -

Microsoft Manipulating Java
CNN is talking about Microsoft and their recent plans to open a competing version of Java. This is another reason that The Java Lobby needs members. "Write Once Run on Windows" is already fully functional in VB and C++. It shouldn't be that way in Java too. Java is all about cross platform. If you take that away, it just isn't Java anymore. -
Crossfire Transcripts
Pohl wrote in to tell us that CNN is offering transcripts of last nights crossfire. Read famous people argue about the MS Monopoly. -
More Teardrop News

Genetics Algorithims Growing
An area that I have done some research into, genetic algorithims for computers is continuing to grow. Volvo Corp is nowing using a computer equipped with a genetic algorithim so that it basically "evolves" to handle new and more difficult tasks. Very cool--and where biotech will be headed in the near future. -

More workers needed
In a bit of news that will hopefully result in more money for all of us, CNNfn is reporting again on looming problem of a lack of programmers. Currently projections stand at a shortfall of almost 200,000 workers. And with the way US visa laws work, getting more people in is problematic. How many of you folks have been able to get more money because of the lack of people? -

Single chip PC
National Semiconducter has announced plans to make a single chip PC. Current forecasts have the chip being released in June of 1999, and the company hopes that it will fuel the sub-500$ computer range. National also reports that they already have several vendors for the chip lined up, including at least "one tier 1" company, although they refuse to give names. -
Several MS Tidbits
We have several MS Related Links that I figured I would just clump together quick a second before lunch. First Paul Mickus sent us this one where you can read about the other side to the MS story. Next up is this section at CNN. Jon Webb sent us the link, which is a special section devoted to all the "problems" microsoft has been having lately. Nothing new, but interesting to see it all bunched together. Finally, a bit unrelated, but Jay Kominek told us that a Linux Binary of NetShow is now available. I might have mentioned that before, but it probably is worth mentioning again. -
New Bandwidth Options
j sent in this link and Jeff Roberts sent in this one where you can read about a huge consortium of big names (Intel, Microsoft, Compaq, Baby Bells) working together to get a new technology, DSL, off the ground. 1.5 million bps sounds nice to me. -
1st part of space station ready
Not the normal news here at Slashdot, but this was much too cool to pass up. The first part of the international (ESA, USA, Russia, Canada, Japan) space station has been completed, and is ready for launch. As segments are completed, they will be ferried up. The first occupants, American astronauts and Russian cosmonauts will occupy it in the first part of 1999. -
Navy Dismisses Gay AOLer
This story tells about how Uncle Sam is dismissing a gay sailor from the Navy after discovering that his AOL Profile reveals that he is gay. Personally, I think it is very wrong that they dismissed him for being gay, but having an AOL account is more than fair grounds imho. Thanks to John R. Beckett for giving me this story and letting me make that joke. -
Yahoo invests in AudioNet
Yahoo, the most visited site on the Internet, has announced a 1.35 million investment in AudioNet, a Dallas-based Internet broadcaster. Yahoo! has been trying to find ways to diversify from its' original function, as a sort of universal bookmark file, with offerings like free email, and now trying to buy minority shares in some other up-and-coming companies. -
Biased Experts on MS Case
Thanks to Dave DeMaagd for sending me this story where we read that Microsoft is going wacky over biases in their current case. Next we have Kurt DeMaagd (Dave's brother, and another of my roomates) who sent in this story at microsoft.com discussing the Microsoft viewpoint. -
Job's And Ellison Prank
Apparently Steve "Ego Man" Jobs and Larry "I Hate Microsoft" Ellison got annoyed by a consultant who kept saying he wanted to be Apple's new CEO. They decided to have some fun so they sent him email saying he got the job. Hope that email is considered a verbal contract *grin*. Thanks to Simon Janes for sending us the story.
