Re:The ultimate "man made earthquake"
The first warning signs of the Mt. Saint Helens eruption started about 10 weeks before the eruption. 3 weeks before the eruption a red zone was established around the mountain. There were no hikers on the mountain proper, just a few people who had property there and refused to leave. Interactive map showing the locations of the people killed by the May 18th 1980 eruption of Mt. Saint Helens. Nearly all of them were well outside the red zone. The huge lateral blast of the initial eruptions pretty much surprised everyone. Now we know better.

Social Justice => Victimhood
There will certainly be abuses. There will be people who take and don't give back. And this should be prevented
I think this has been severely underemphasized and is missing a dynamic. There are compelling arguments to evaluate whether social justice is doing more harm than good. http://www.columbian.com/news/2013/dec/03/ideology-of-victimhood-hampers-those-at-the-bottom/

Re:School::politics
Apparently in 2008 your pension fund lost $17 billion dollars. Compound that with the problem that there are no good/safe investments anymore so if miracles don't happen with your pension's investments the state will have to fund the difference... hence how pissed off the average person is.
I'm sorry that you're earning 20k less than the private sector... I assume that you're a newish employee since it looks to me like the people at the top are still doing very, very well for themselves.

TFA didn't mention full details on the cop
Oddly enough, the article didn't mention the back story behind the police office who's 3 year old died. If we look at the local media: http://www.oregonlive.com/clark-county/index.ssf/2012/01/former_clark_county_deputy_fil.html
We read: "Investigators further state that Owens blamed his son's death to his 11-year-old daughter and tried to force a confession out of her.
"...Deputy Owens did not maintain the highest standards of conduct and discredited himself and the Sheriff's Office....," the document states. "....His selfish, shameful and cowardly behavior has left an indelible mark on our agency and has raised serious doubts about his credibility, judgment, truthfulness and fitness for duty."
The Multnomah County District Attorney's Office declined to prosecute Owens for allegedly coercing his daughter. The incident happened in the Portland area."
and wonder what in the world it takes for a police office to actually get arrested. He & his wife apparently dragged the daughter to a fast food joint where the wife "questioned" the daughter: http://www.columbian.com/news/2011/nov/18/his-selfish-shameful-and-cowardly-behavior-has-lef/?print -- "But prosecutors declined this fall to try the deputy because it was in Multnomah County, Ore., where he allegedly coerced his daughter, when Owens and his wife were driving the girl to the airport about a month after the shooting.
“In review of the evidence in the case, the charges we were looking at were witness-tampering allegations,” Clark County Prosecutor Tony Golik said Friday. “Because of jurisdiction, we didn’t feel we had” sufficient evidence that a crime occurred in Clark County.
The case was referred to the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office. A deputy district attorney there declined to press charges on either Owens or his wife. A call to the spokesman for that DA’s office was not returned Friday." -
Re:3 straight months!
The man was actually arrested on charges of theft of services. This article in The Columbian has more information about it.

more from local newspaperhttp://www.columbian.com/news/localNews/06212006n
e ws37573.cfmSeems like he was parking in their parking lot, and refused to go even after they repeatedly asked him to leave, so I don't see why this isn't an open-and-shut trespassing case. (Of course, IANAL.)
I'll let others comment on the mention of "erotic services".

Not that big of a deal...The libraries in my area are very anti-censorship, and would like to remain that way. (With optional filtering for those patrons who would like to use it for their children, etc). They've had several public meetings seeking public input on filtering.
One thing I didnt realize is how little funding our library system receives from the Federal Government... $6,500 out of a budget of $18 million!
So while a legislative victory would be nice, it's easy for some library systems to just say forget it and do without the federal funding and headache of mandatory filtering.
