Some info
I like how they've weaseled out of the whole fiasco (why didn't
/. post a link to the original press release?):"Contrary to some reports, any performance impacts are workload-dependent, and, for the average computer user, should not be significant and will be mitigated over time".
I'm not sure I can read between the lines properly but I guess new revisions of Coffee Lake/Kaby Lake/SkyLake(X) CPUs are coming and they will contain a hardware fix (though it still seems highly unlikely considering how difficult it's to deploy a new hardware design - however unlike other fabless companies, like AMD/NVIDIA/ARM/etc Intel has everything under control). After all they've known about this issue for almost half a year.
Meanwhile as for consumer workloads they are correct. Two German websites have already tested a Windows build with a fix and found very little performance losses.
Phoronix has also run a number of tests on Linux and found out that only few (mostly artificial) tasks are seriously affected.
Intel home users may sleep well. As for enterprise customers no one has run virtualization tests yet though - that's what truly important for large deployments (clouds).

Re:Nice try
That's not what I've been reading, i.e. here. Something up with their benchmarking load?
-
Re:Stil wrong - and stupid!
Do you have some benchmarks of it against the (newer) Intel GMA 950 (which is the chip the MacBook has)?
Why yes I do! Last one is in German, but numbers are still numbers regardless of language.
Given a choice between the two, I'd actually take the Intel chip because it's got a Free 3D-accelerated driver and the Nvidia one doesn't.
That's like saying "No, I'd rather walk than drive. I'd have to pay for gas."
it's got a Free 3D-accelerated driver
Oh, and the driver is always free. It's the chip itself that cost money. -
2x2x2 == 8! Welcome Woodcrest in Q1/2007!
A new generation of processing power is coming
to us in less than 6 months!
2 physical CPUs on a Mainboard with each
2 Woodcrest units, 4MB 2nd each with each
2 cores
8 cores!
I'm looking forward to it. Put 16GB RAM into it and you'll
have a perfect setup for huge Websphere/Weblogic cluster
tests on a _single_ workstation!

Re:Tech Report Review
There are lots of other reviews out there, too. Looks like the 6800GS kicks the X1600 where it hurts. Over and over and over again.

Overclock AMD on HP
Overclocking on the Pentium I was fun. CPU speeds were still far far away from the GHz levels and in school, it had amazing brag value. Never matter that the recursion programs we wrote in TurboC (it was way back
... I was a kid) never seemed to compile any faster.
Overclocked my HP Athlon 2.2GHz upto 2.5 Ghz. Noteable difference? Well, super pi http://www.computerbase.de/downloads/software/benc hmarks/super_pi/did calculate PI to 512K decimals in 49 seconds (It was 52 seconds earlier). Didnt make much of a difference to anything else that I use. (Am an MBA now ... what i use is powerpoint and outlook ... I sold out!!)
The fact remains that overclocking is not a performance enhancement ... the results are just incremental, but they do give the kicks. Very zen!
Remember the "Turbo" button on the machines those days? -

Looks, as there is no chance for an AMD 3200+ Systeme to win a round. Hope it will change with the athlon 64 ;)
