Gandi & Core
Gandi and most of the Core registrars will register a domain with fuck in it. Gandi is in Europe so they'll charge you with those silly Euros, but assuming you don't have some real shitty credit card that shouldn't be a problem if you're outside Europe, you should be able to find a Core registrar from your country of origin if that's the kind of thing you're into.

www.netwiz.netI like netwiz.net, part of corenic.net.
Registration is only $25 a year and changes are web-based. NetWiz is part of CORE, which hosts several registrars.

Joker.comI have now bought several domains from joker.com. Once you figure out their kind of funky interface it is REALLY cool! You can change a lot of things through forms online with your username/password that would take a lot more hassle through NSI. Furthermore, it only costs 15 dollars if you are int he US and you can register for only a year if you like. They will provide DNS service for a small charge as well if you need it.
The only drawback I have found is that CORENic doesn't really seem to telly uo how to claim ownership over the DNS servers people have entered into joker and gotten handles for. As a result, my ISP doesn't get notification when I buy a domain. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Re:I'd be more impressed...That's patently false. You can't pay for a non-existing domain name with the NSI's online payment system.
The name passport.com was free for the taking at several registrars mentioned at CORE. NSI had dropped the name at CORE, anyone could register the name at any other registrar.
The records at NSI were irrelevant. And had it been a new registration, he would be paying $70, not $35.
I don't know how NSI operates, it is quite possible they still had a record on passport.com. That would explain why NSI prolongated the name for 35$.

Re:Paying for it != Owning itWhat I wonder is what the passport.com internic records looked like before Dec 27. That is, was the Billing Contact Carolyn Gudmundson...or was it someone else who may no longer work at MS?
It is possible that there were records at Network Solutions for passport.com. The domain name passport.com was available as soon as Dec. 24. I checked at several registars listed at CORE.
Anybody could have claimed it. -
Re:So what's a good service?Id also recommend voxel i have 3 domains hosted with them and am very happy. plus they are giving back a decent percentage of their profits back to the fsf community and i think they offer free hosting for gpl'ed projects
as for domain registration, the cheapest ive seen is an australian company called totalnic which charges 35 per domain for 2 years. theres a bunch of core resellers listing on the corenic webpage.
hope some of this linkage helps

A self-refuting thesisThe idea of more TLDs is certainly very appealing. When I first heard about CORE, and their push for
.firm, .web, .info, .etc., I thought it was a really neat idea, and I headed on over to their site to have a look. Well, it turns out that corenic.org, corenic.net, and corenic.com all point to the same site.
To make this explicit for the boys in the back row firing spitwads at each other: groups with enough resources snap up their names in every major TLD "to avoid confusion." Adding more TLDs without controls over who can use them is unlikely to change this, and will probably result in little effect except that the registrar business will become a little more profitable as a larger block of names has to be purchased every time a new movie, breakfast cereal, or presidential candidate is launched.
Furthermore, so long as the Big Two browsers default to .com, that TLD will be the only noospheric real estate attractive to groups interested in reaching a general public instead of us nerds. If you need proof of this, looks at what an organization with its own TLD uses. -
You Can Still Register Them Right Now!!
Only Domainbank now blocks such registrations though they allowed them up until late yesterday. But many good 'dirty' domains remain. Just Use a different CORE Registrar. Other active CORE registrars open to the public still accept such registrations and in fact I just registered some more a few hours ago including 'fuckcensorship.com'. I'd recommend Nominalia since their system works pretty well and $68 is the best price around. Just be sure to use your OWN dns servers or since they charge about a $33 surcharge per dns! http://www.nominalia.com/ Netwizards appears to do such registrations, but you'll need to create an acct there first and then wait until it's verified before you can register domains there - or faster, call them first. http://www.netwizards.net Any questions or problems, don't hesitate to contact me and/or post to the following groups: comp.protocols.tcp-ip.domains alt.domain-names.registries There's still some good ones left
:-) Good Luck!! Ron Bennett
