Re:simple request
There used to be this nifty site, CPU Scorecard that tried to do just that. Seems it's not been updated of late.
Given all of the other factors such as FSB speed, graphics card speed, general motherboard performance, etc. the overall "speed" of a CPU has become rather subjective at best. I guess all we can do is say: "oh yeah? My computer is faster than yours! nyaaah nyaaah nyaaaah."
(oh..and mine is. nyaah.) -

As of right now...
The P4 2.8GHz and the Xeon 2.4GHz are the ONLY 2 chips on CPU Scorecard which are ranked above the G4 1.25GHz.
Heeyyy...Imagine that! Now imagine if Motorola got off their ass and upped the G4's clock speed to 2.8GHz. You'd be blown away. Man I can't wait until the mythical^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H G5 comes out and wipes that smug little x86 grin off your faces.
If a G4 at less than half the clock speed of a P4 can still keep that close in the grand scheme of things, then you, sir, are talking out your ass with a megaphone. -
Re:They got an empty case, right?
HERE is one that says otherwise....

Re:Do these run any cooler?
When they shrink the die size, why don't they also release some of the lower clock speeds? Like an 800MHz chip that would only need passive cooling, and a 250W power supply.. Yes, I could underclock one of the new ones. But, I want one that's tested & confirmed to work with passive cooling.
I'll second that. I've really been wanting to build a quiet, low-heat system, but have been hesitant to use a chip like the Via C3. Having a duron/athlon with these characteristcs would be great. Who needs a 1.4 GHz chip? Give me a quiet and cool one at 700 MHz. -

Re:Price-Performance of "iCubes" and other Macs
>I've been told to expect twice the performance from a G3 than a similarly clocked PIII.
That is unadorned horseshit. But don't take my word for it: go to www.spec.org and check out the numbers yourself. 20-30% is more the average gain, and that's cold comfort when you can buy 1.2GHz Athlon chips for less than $500 a pop.
It was horseshit when Apple tried to say that the G3 was twice as fast as a Pentium II back in 1998. I repeat: it was bunk. But, it has turned out that a 500 MHz G4 (not G3) is remarkably fast for it's clock speed. Here's a PC-oriented benchmark site, quoted on Slashdot a few weeks back, showing that a 500 MHz G4 is only 15% slower than a 1 GHz Athlon. That's impressive, especially when you look at the huge difference in power consumption. -
Re:It's out now what
Yeah, considering it's their trademark and all..
OK seriously, check out CPU ScoreCard to see the greatest value: an athlon. Whoot whoot!

*Not* the fastest
CPU Scorecard doesn't include Alpha or "other high-end SMP-capable processors", so I wouldn't pay too much attention to whatever they happen to rank at the top of their little list.

Look who wrote the speed tester
The program they make the speed tests with is Intel's iCOMP. Is it any wonder that Intel's CPUs come top?
