Re:No it isn't 'improving'
J,
I'm afraid you are wrong. Current (see here...) uses the power lines for their transmission. I've watched Cinergy guys jumper the transformers to install it.
You *can* send signals over power lines without creating a radio nightmare. It's being done right now. I don't know what frequencies these folks are operating at..but it's working. And working well. I know a few HAM operators in this area, and no complaints so far.
BTW, thanks for not flaming back....I looked at my first reply to you and it was childish. My apologies. -
Cinergy (Cincinnati Area BPL)
I live in the Cincinnati area and have been patiently waiting for the Cinergy (our local power company) BPL service to be deployed to my area. My message to anyone waiting for BPL to come to their area: DON'T HOLD YOUR BREATH!!
Cinergy had a huge multi-year beta test, followed by a production rollout.... that ONLY covered the area that the beta test did. That was over a year ago, since then, they've yet to expand their coverage area AT ALL.
It sounds too good to be true at $35 for 3mbit SYMETRICAL (no more DSL/Cable 20x download that you have for upload BS)

Cincinnati BPLIt's being tested in the Cincinnati area by Current Communications a division of Cinergy. Currently, about 8,000 homes wired up.
According to the section chief of the Ohio ARRL, problems are minimal.
(at the bottom of the article:) "Joe Phillips of Fairfield, the Ohio section chief for the American Radio Relay League, says that so far the Cinergy roll-out hasn't created the radio interference many ham radio operators had feared." -
When? Now
In Cincinnati, OH, at least. They started trials last March, and are slowly moving it into new neighborhoods.

Re:Tests in Cincinnati, OH
Cincinnati is not in a testing phase anymore. A lot of areas inside the 275 loop have it available and most of the rest of cincinnati should be covered by the end of 2005. http://www.current.net/

Some are tryingIn metro Cincinnati, OH, the elec company is rolling it out, slowly.
According to Kevin Kushman (CEO of Current Communications), "This [ruling] will spur a national buildout of BPL."

Too bad for Iowa
Good thing I live in Cincinnati, where we not only have had the testing, but they are rolling it out now. Yea!
