I think that a GPS module would be better than 802.11. Wouldnt it be nice to say "I took this picture here," and be able to map it on your webpage? It is being done (in Japan, of course) with Phone cameras (that have GPS). example. Why not for full SLR cameras? Just embed the info in the EXIF tag.

That would be cool and useful.

For me without a doubt the most unappreciated (in the box office at least) movie was True Romance.

It came out at the same time as another Christian Slater movie, which was a romance so I never went to see it in the theater because I got it confused with the other movie (Untamed Heart). I imagine a lot of people did the same thing.

But True Romance is a great flick. Written by Quentin Tarantino and starring Gary Oldman in one of my favorite of his performances (and I think he may be the most underappreciated living actor).

Last night before I went to bed I had done a GeoURL neighbors search to see what was registered around Tokyo. This morning I reloaded that search to see what had been added, to my surprise a lot had been taken away. Here's the cache html from last night: last night, and here's the html that just loaded: this morning.

I had noticed last night that some enterprising hotel marketer had plastered GeoURL with links to their hotel web sites (and hundreds of these, all over the world, not just Japan) and thought that while this probably exposed an oversight in the GeoURL design it was certainly a legitimate use of the system. The oversight being that they should have added categories to separate business from personal, etc, so that if you were looking for blogs in a certain area you wouldn't have to wade through links for hotels, coffeeshops and thrift stores.

But now they're all gone. If they were taken away by the original link poster, well OK, but I find it more likely that someone at GeoURL got rid of them. I find this disturbing; It leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

It would be easy to add another META tag that Geo-URL could use to do this categorization. That's what they should do rather than start getting picky about who can use the system. Fuck censorship.

I just checked the source for one of the de-listed hootle.com pages and it does indeed still contain the geo.position data that is accepted by GeoURL. I say again: fuck censorship.

We would like to point out to all of the mirror sites with things like "fuck the lawyers" on them that it is because of a generous group of lawyers that we are still here. These lawyers are working for free (or much less than they could get by going over to the Dark Side) and don't deserve this kind of abuse.

We have just been informed that the DVD Copy Control Association is seeking a restraining order against us (named as "Doe 28") for distributing DeCSS and linking to pages that distribute it and linking to pages that link to pages that distribute it.

Section 48 of this request states that we supposedly "have received notice through the MPA and refused to remove the information at issue". This is absolutely false! We have never received any such request (from the MPA or anybody else for that matter) and we obviously were not given the opportunity to refuse! Either Jared Bobrow needs to go back to law school or the DVD CCA needs to get a new firm. This is the kind of sloppy work that could get an important document thrown out.

Explanation on legality of this information

The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.

Attention www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files. That list of mirrors has been replaced with a page reading "This site has been taken down for legal reasons." Here's what the maintainer put on the site the day it was shut down:

NOTE (Thu, Nov 11, 12:17pm EST): I've recently been informed that a law firm which is likely to be one that would try get these mirrors taken down has been visiting this mirror site as well as others. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.

Some help on the Cipher Challenge by dav · 1999-10-11 22:20 · Score: 1 · on The Code Book

First off, I'd like to say that I *loved* this book. I had just finished Cryptonomicon (where my favorite part of the book was the World War II cryptanalysts adventures) and was primed for some in depth exploration of cryptography. Singh has written a broad-ranging but highly accessible book. I have some issues with his views of finality on quantum cryptography, but as a whole the book was intelligent and well written.

Anyhow, so of course I jumped in on the cipher challenge at the end of the book. The first two were easy, Stage 1 solved in minutes with vi and a quick series of %s/D/a/g type commands, and Stage 2 with a small perl script.

I've coded up a quick and messy java app with a horrible interface to help out on Stage 3 (I think I need more help though, it might be in German. Luckily my girlfriend is Austrian). In the spirit of sharing with the /. community I've made the java app and the OCR-scanned-in cipher texts available on my web site. The applet link is not working yet, but you can download the source and compile yourself. It runs as an application too.

Finally, I also have set up a mailing list for anyone who wishes to discuss or collaborate on the cipher challenge. The subscribe info is on the web site.
