Re:From IRC, the reason:
Hm, I'm highly in doubt about this.
The php developper is Jani Taskinen : http://photos.derickrethans.nl/album/album02/Jani. sized.jpg
The UN peace keeper, also computer scientist, seems to be Jari Taskinen :

It's Jani vs Jari. It seems that they are two different people so it's highly plausible that someone saw this on the web (when looking for "Jani Taskinen" on Google, "Jari Taskinen" is automatically proposed) and did a fake log or a steal the nickname on IRC.
Well, perhaps the real PHP dev Jani was also part of the army. But it seems too much of a coincidence to me.
So, unless more proof is showed, I consider this IRC log as a fake intended to bring the Israel/Lebanon troll on /. (sadly one of those trolls who is played with guns instead of puns) and under the spotlights of the web => digg and site like. This is a very common practice. -

Looks like he is usually unhappy...

PHP Security
Some of us are trying to help the situation by educating PHP developers. For my part, I try to write articles (and make them available for free), give talks at conferences and user groups, and answer questions on mailing lists and forums.
There's also the PHP Security Consortium, the Zend Framework (which will hopefully include most things on my wishlist as well as solve other problems), and a new input filter extension.
As BP says, it's a start.

Re:Multilingual user interface
I found that translating some concepts gave strings of very different lengths. For example, some technical stuff became much longer strings in Spanish (maybe it was my translators). What do you do about the problem of the web forms getting messed up in different languages? My site is small enough to just test and adjust where necessary, but for a bigger site, this could be a problem.
In my case the number of different page templates (about 50) and languages (two, English and Dutch) was also small enough to adjust things by hand if needed.
PHP Developer Derick Rethans has given talks about multilingual development, there might be stuff of interest there.

BTW, PHP news is available in RDF format as a Slashbox. Go to your Slashdot "preferences" to add.
As for Language wars, no language is better, it's just a better tool for a particular job.
