OEMs Jump Onto Transmeta Bandwagon
Scooter writes "News.com is reporting that Diamond Multimedia has announced a Web-Pad product based on Transmeta's 3120 processor. The report also mentions that NEC, and possibly a dozen other companies are investigating similar possibilities. It's nice to see things taking shape for Crusoe so quickly. " For more details on the chip itself, check out our recent story.S3 has also announced development work that will be done with Transmeta. They are working on a "Linux-based Internet appliance". -
Pine Introduces New Portable MP3 device
TheTomcat writes "Big deal. Another MP3 player, huh? Not quite. This story at news.com talks about a new MP3 device that plays MP3 CD's, audio CDs and comes with a built-in FM tuner. While it has no capabilities to store songs (like the Empeg or the Diamond Rio), this would be IDEAL for my car. Hook it up to a decent power supply, an amp, and voila, out goes my current CD deck. It even comes with 10 seconds of anti-skip for Construction season (aka Summer), a remote control, and a built-in EQ. I'm drooling. [scheduled release: November]" -
Diamond and RIAA finally settle lawsuits
Rahga writes "This quietly-released and vaguely worded press release says that Diamond and RIAA finally settled all pending litigation, with words on Diamond vowing support for SDMI. Now record execs everywhere can sleep safely again. " Anyone know any more details? -
Rio, The Special Edition
Dan Guisinger writes "To match the NOMAD from Creative Labs (Which is ugly as sin and has worse battery performance), they released the Rio PMP300 Special Edition available from their website only. It has 64MB of Flash memory and a translucent Teal case. It sells for $249. " Getting closer. -
Live Nude Quickies
Nothing I like better than post X-Files quickies. Oh wait. That came out wrong. (rimshot) I should post some links quick to cover up my terrible joke: Eduardo Silva sent us a link to the online version of At RMSs Essay from Open Sources. It's on the past, present and future of the FSF. Jaws sent us a link to a Katz article at Mercury Center called The End of the Microsoft Age. Dan Guisinger sent us a link to some new Rio Accessories including a remote control that plugs into the headphone jack. Andy King sent us a link to the Web Reference entry for the Slashdot Effect Elphin sent us a link to a nifty poster of the Netscape color palette. GtHS sent us a link to an article that the trillions of you who continue to submit the hamster dance will like: It's the Penguin Dance. Pete Rijks sent us a link to the Scary Squirrels for all you conspiracy nuts. GTM writes The Net Wars Trilogy, a strange net parody of a certain trilogy you might like. baegucb sent us a link to another site on the hot topic of furby mutiliation. This time with a microwave. jchildress@netspeak.com sent us a link to another scary patent. How does this stuff get in the system? -
Diamond Rio Selling Well
Tramm Hudson writes "In this Reuters article, Diamond Multimedia states that they are making 10,000 units a week and are still behind demand. Otherwise a fairly standard news report -- "Users love MP3, industry hates it". " I've found that they skip terribly at 128kbits, but less then that and they are tolerable. The first portable mp3 player than can store 5+ hours of music at 128kbits and not skip will do well. Until then, the Rio is a beta test for the real revolution. When the real deal is here though, the Rio will have made sure that we have lots of MP3s to choose from. -
RIAAs Injunction Against Diamond Lifted
The very cool chrisd writes "The RIAA's injunction against diamond has been lifted. That is all! Look for press releases to come from diamond tomorrow. Also, way cool seeing you guys at ALS. We gave out , what, 800 shirts?" Diamond's Home Page, Here is a link to the Diamond Press Release. I hope this sets some sort of precedent... -

RIAA Granted Injunction
The RIAA has served a restraining order to Diamond Multimedia in order to halt the sale of the Diamond Rio. Because the Rio doesn't have any or not enough anti-piracy protection ("it cannot make serial recordings"), the RIAA says it violates a federal law. -

Diamond sued over portable MP3 player
A whole bunch of people wrote in with this but RUAOK was the first. He writes "The Recording Industry Association of America is sueing Diamond Multimedia for selling the Rio portable MP3 player. This is the first attack of a major player in the MP3 community. The RIAA is backed into a corner and trying to lash out at anyone that is willing to stick out their neck. " You can also read about it at Wired or at ZDNet.
