How does this stuff get in the system?
Why is a patent for a tamper-resistant hinge scary ? And why is the applicant Microsoft Corp. ? Is that what makes it scary ?
Why, wherever can I find one of these amazing Microsoft Butt Hinges? Are they planning on using this on the Windows 2000 boxes, or to keep rabid linux people from assailing their offices.
Quick! Someone patent the use of Microsoft Butt Hinges for use in senseless beatings of open source developers!
Did you commandeer my anteater?
Get ready to upgrade all your hinges to the superior Microsoft ActiveHinge (TM) 2000 product. This revolutionary hinge product features a handy windows gui for user-friendly hinge configuration.
NB: Due to the added hinge weight, doorframes will need to be of the reinforced steel type. Microsoft reccomends you upgrade to its enterprise-ready WinFrame product.
all of a sudden there was this huge sucking sound and anteaters were flying and swooping all around the car. I remember a voice screaming "Jesus, what are these goddamn animals??!!"
The anteater invasion has begun. Drink your vodka and GO HOME!

Oops. It was OK on the preview, but was devoured by the concatenation process. Honest.
Jaws
searching for microsoft reveals many *much more scarier* patents of concern to this contingent...
drag 'n drop, cut & paste, etc. all kinds of crap with prior art.
screw software patents. what b.s.
I already saw BOTH the MS butt-hinge and a dancing penguin over at Segfault.org a long while back.
You people just don't understand! These Anteaters belong to the World Bank, that money goes to Italy!
You people voted for Hubert Humphrey. And you killed Jesus.
I'm not wearin any pants and niether is my anteater, Rufus.
I'm happy to announce that the Revolution now includes not just anteaters, but my pants, which are not on right now. Soon the chair will follow, and then the Coke can! And then...THE WORLD!
THERE IS ONLY ONE ANTEATER REVOLUTION
although now it is the Anteater and My Pants and My Coke Can revolution. You get the idea.
The Anteater Revolution is upon us, and it is gaining speed rapidly. It is now the Anteaters and my pants(which are not on) and my coke can and my chair and my smelly roommate's socks and the chicks downstairs and Linus and CmdrTaco and Paco and Evil Twin Sister Dara and Scientific Atlanta Anteaters Anteaters, spam, spam, spam, spam and spam Revolution
More will join. Many will die. Saw off your ass with a rusty hacksaw rather than resisting. Slashdot will belong to us!!!
The Butt Hinge is their solution to protecting a windows system from the Back Orifice program.
Many times I have heard RMS portrayed as as a fanatic/extemist/lunatic. But if you read that article at http://www.fsf.org/gnu/thegnuproject.html anybody can see the real deal. He is not against commerce or business its all about SOURCE CODE. Whats so extreme about that? ;)
MS could start distributing Linux (under the GPL of course) tommorow and we wouldn't have a problem with that. (I mean its not personal is it...?)
It's the fact that they've integrated the butt straps. First the Web browser, now the butt straps, where will it all lead?
That's the problem with Microsoft. Always focussing on the hinges, and completely ignoring the butts that rely on them.
For we are the true ant eaters. We know their wiles and their ways. We know the ground in which they live. Those things claiming heritage as anteaters are abominations with their scales and their spines. The pangolin and the echidna are only interested in feeling the glory of the beginning of the dictionary. We will defend our right not to bear the entire weight of the language on our backs! They must return to their proper places, for they are deigned by Webster to slave under us! It has always been so, and so it always shall be!
Angry Aardvarks
That would make for a good T-shirt!

I think it's time for your attorney to take the wheel. here's your half of the blotter.. just chew it up like baseball gum.
I don't get CT's joke. Maybe that's a blessing in disguise...
Mr. Katz, that piece you wrote has GOT to be the most insightful and complete deconstruction of the so-called 'visionary' Bill Gates I have ever read. Thank you...you just made my monday morning.
It's just sad that it has taken this long for someone in the press to write that which has been on the minds of most of the computer clueful for the past decade. Will Zachman almost did...but then we know how that ended up. :/
Kill a furby: http://www.slashdot.org/articles/98/12/26/1234205. shtml
Wait! We can't stop here! This is bat country.
John Katz has posted an article other than /. about computing, I haven't had time to read it yet, but I take it to be postive for OSS.
Now what would of happened if John decided to take all of those flames (millions upon millions) to heart.
Would that article be there?
Got to respect the man, if for nothing else, standing up against the fire storm
My God that's funny. I missed most of the jokes concerning the names though
like, what is "Ori-Chan Stallobi" supposed to reference? What about "alan colo"? And what's up with "knodo? "lionlike"?? What about "Pauldo Allrissen"? And for that matter "vallmer" and "lina"?
Please explain to this lowly newbie.
Gates revealed as the Mongul he is. I could never see why some people would 'worship' Gates.
As posted MS was a late comer to the net. Their real coming to power was getting MS DOS on IBM's PC. That pathetic wanabe OS. But thanks to PCs popularity they grew and grew....
2 years ao or even 18 months ago I thought that nothing would stop ms and that all attemps would fail, no matter what industry you were in. I became an mcse 18 months ago because I thought this was the future of every It professional. I thought that unix was surely dead or about to die off sone. It was only 18 moths ago I read magazine articles about how active directory servers were going to kill NDS and novell was a failure to make NDS allready and there was nothing novell could do about it (remember this?). Even some of you unix guys had doubts. You loved unix but you thought NT was the only way and boy were you screwed!
:-) ) I remember telling computer guys that "You have 2 choices, we could stick with unix and be humiliated for awhile and eventually be demoted when our servers get NT on them or we can just take the grudge and go with NT and look like abunch of entrepreneurs and have upper managment pat us on the back for a job well done and have a big pay raise.". Today even zdnet isn't nearly as pro ms as it was last year. Why is this? Its because of future outlook and innovation that excite all of us computer geeks. Name one cool thing ms is working on that has a chance to change the world like windows? None. The only thing I can even think of is NT 5.0. But wasn't NT 4.0 suposed to bring us into the promised land? NT 5.0 is just a fix up from poor domain managemnt in 4.0 (active directory, having more then 2 domains connect by a single point to point wans, etc). NT 5.0 will be great for desinging domains but this is boring. Well, uh lets think aobut other ms products that are going to be cool. uh? Nothing. hehehe.
Today its silly now to think such things. even if active directory becomes popular , NDS will be around for years. Just 18 months ago you all had to admit that you thought angerly thought that active directory was the future for everything. NT was was king (remember back in 96.
This is problem number 1. Problem number 2 lets think of the other reason why people buy ms products. Hmm people buy ms because its a safe bet for the future and ms has nothing but growth planned. Lets look at the this area which is related to problem 1. None. The media is allready taken by nbc, cnn, time warner and so on. Sorry Gates no growth here. uh internet sites! ya! This will be real easy because you can take windows and force everyone to uh, uh. opps. Sorry Gates! Unlike office which ms bundled with windows to gain market share, you can't gain internet sites this way and oems can't be ms little prawns to controll site on the web and therefore can't be gained using anticompetive ways.
TO me, ms is like a big mountain. People want to get to the top of the world and they see this big mountain called microsoft which is higher then anything else (people buy ms because its the safest option because everyone will be using ms for a long time. hmm kind of sounds like this height analogy). Everyone climbs ms higher and higher for the top and finally they are getting near the peak and even though they are not at the top yet, its obvious that once your at the top there is no way but down. I believe ms is close to its peak and in a year or two it will max to the top. After no more insurance of growth, it will decline and people will be looking at other options because ms will lose its fear and power of pursasion. I predictated this myself last summer(this has nothing to do with first experience with linux). As I stated earlier with windows 2000, there is nothing I can even think of that ms can take controll. No growth. They are like IBM. After pc's were popular their was no longer amy growth for IBm and it lost market share stock really fast and the clones were finally looked upon when IBM bo longer had an answer to every question. 18 months ago, you could trust Gates. 15 years ago you could trust IBM. Today could you really trust gates or IBM. Sure IBm makes great mainframes and Microsoft makes great office apps (Dont FLAME ME! ms makes the best of the breed office suites. I still hate ms!)but besides from mainframe and office suite solutoins could you really trust either of these companies today? Bye ms. People are finally waking up and getting scared. It is not linux you should be afraid of. Its yourself. You played hardball for so long that you have many allies but no friends in the high tech industry. Your allies will desert you soon and will go down in computer history. You could of been the good guy and worked your way up slowly or made good products but you decided to make your personal wealth and power mre important. Linux was the result of yourself and not abunch of hackers. The hackers would of loved you if you made your os as cool as your office suite and been a good guy and linux never would of had to be born. Sorry ms. Your time is up!
I wonder what all of us will be thinking 2 years from now?
Geeze, with the patent in the news, I guess there's no point keeping the lid on Microsoft House 2000 any longer. Legacy cars and roads will be supported during the transition period to the new Microsoft Roadway(TM) standard, but I gather you're on your own when it comes to using legacy appliances with the new six-wire Microsoft PowerPlug(TM). Plumbing may have to wait until the first Service Pack ships, but at least it comes with Windows!
Upgrade cycle: The Intel door ("this way in") needs the latest MS hinges. The MS hinges only work on the latest Intel doors.
All driven by marketing.
Probably a Microsoft employee having some fun in his off time got caught by one of those "we own everything you produce including your next five children" NDA's.

Why can't he post stuff like that to
This is the third time the butt hinge has been mentioned on slashdot. It has already been mentioned in a comment and a previous story.
that would be RMS's article, not ESR's
I know I saw this patent previously here in Slashdot. Why, I printed it and had it posted on the bulletin board!

It's true that Gates's image was perfect for the business culture of the era following the glitzy Reagan administration: Gates 1.0a seemed to be an unpretentiously oafish Ivy Leaguer, so bewildered by his sudden fortunes that he hadn't time to upgrade his lifestyle. Gates 2.1, on the other hand, has been recast as a sharply wheeler-dealer, the kind of person most middle-management types love to fantasize about.
"He's all...business!" I heard a suit once murmur, enraptured. "Never even takes time off! No wonder he made all that money..."
It's interesting how we tend to see things... differently...
teleny, friend of cats.
I know why they did this! If you're stuck in a room with these hinges on the door M$ will charge you big bucks to use the door to leave or you get charged to use the broken window!
Right now I wish someone made Toilet Paper with Bill Gates' face on it. Cause the dingleberries are calling.

Sheesh! This is sad.
:/
That's a rip-off of the DEC Wars "trilogy" that you can find floating around at most UNIX humor sites.
Boo! Boo!

The information in this patent is actually pretty useful. It's an idea of having a door hinge that can't be removed while the door is closed (you have to remove the flaps before you can slide out the pin, and you can't remove the flaps when the door is closed). I'm not a locksmith/carpenter/whatever, so I don't know how obvious this is. The fact that Microsoft owns this patent is interesting, to say the least.
But seriously, MS needs these to protect Windows users from getting up the butt whenever a new bug is discovered.

there was something similar in the User Friendly strip already. All funny though.

I guess a lot of sites would be willing to pay protection money for not being mentioned on Slashdot.
They have done MS Windows, know they will do MS Doors.....
Where do you want to go today?
You will go where I damm well say you can go, and we are making High security doors to make sure...
