Re:Low watt, high performance? Seg fault
I know, that's one of the main reasons I got a new PC. Saying that, however, the ti4200 would run games like doom3 (un?)happily, though I never got it. I wasn't going to just upgrade the graphics card because it was AGP, and the entire system was crap by this point anyway.

Re:Really kinda cool
I don't think you really need to wait to do that. Some of what you are talking about is already possible. You might want to look up NVIDIA's CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture). It essentially allows you to run C programs on the video card.
It's also important to note that an NVIDIA 8800GTX has somewhere between 200-300 GFLOPS of power, which IIRC is about what the Cell has too. By comparison, I think a Core 2 Quadro has something like 50 GFLOPS. So, if raw processing power is what you are after, CUDA is something you might want to look into. Unfortunately, I only have minimal experience with it and have not tried to run both a game engine and a CUDA program at the same time, so I don't know how well you could swap back and forth between the two.
The NVIDIA has also guaranteed that CUDA will run on all future boards, so anything that's a Gefore 8XXX and later should run your CUDA program. I know some of the Quadro and "workstation" boards also run CUDA, but I can't recall which models.
*I have seen different GFLOPs reported for the 8800GTX, with an NVIDIA provided graph stating ~300GFLOPS (I think). This article stats that it has 512 GFLOPS of power: http://www.digital-daily.com/video/geforce_8800/index03.htm -
Re:Timeline
Just something I picked up reading random things on
/. over the years. But I did a little research in case you were curious about the history of AMD: http://www.digital-daily.com/editorial/amd-history /
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMD
So although saying "they were founded to compete with Intel" is incorrect, the part about them not being able to whipe AMD off the map is still pretty true. Due to requirements by chip buyers like IBM and the US military there needs to be at least two chip makes not to mention that, apparently, AMD can legally license quite a bit from Intel keeping technology from becoming far too different, and if they leverage their monopoly too much they risk lawsuits like the kind they're facing now.

Re:So what?
I can see I hit a nerve. Personal attacks even! Relax man!
I admit I didn't read TFA when I made my original post so I wasn't aware that they were talking about the actual bus speed (200MHz) and not the effective speed (which is usually what the industry uses when talking about FSB speeds) of 800MHz.
Either way it doesn't matter... even 1% off spec isn't a big enough deal to cause problems.
On the other hand... the chip timings I really don't know about. I have no experience in this area so I can't really say if that's libel to cause problems or not? It would certainly raise an eyebrow though.
The thing is... would Asus really do this to consumers if they didn't feel confident it wasn't going to cause problems? Hmmm, they might. It certainly wouldn't be out of character for most companies these days. But if it did cause problems, where is the evidence? Where are the reports of problems? All the review sites show pretty much nothing but content customers.
And here's something interesting: another review with screenshots, that show the FSB running at the proper 200MHz!? Have we been duped into believing a lie about a lie? Perhaps more important questions are in the works here. For one: should I ever believe anything posted on slashdot? :).
And while you ask, yes TV looks A LOT smoother than movies (to me). I can actually see movies flicker, which is (partly) why I've stopped going to the theatre.
Anyway... I do agree with you about the difference between say 55 and 60... you're right no one is going to visibly notice that. All I was trying to get at was that this is a more tangible number than the super small amounts of time that motherboard benchmarks are done in. Even though say 1/85th of a second is really damn fast, people can still grasp it.
That's all I was saying.
You're being pedantic and you know it.
Personal attacks are never a good way to show that you know what you're talking about. All it does is tell people you're insecure. -
Fanless video card Review with benchmarksI'm in the process shopping for a fanless card. I found this review useful (Nvidia and ATI). Sorry, no linux. The review comes with detailed benchmarks.
includes...- PCI-E and AGP
- Nvidia Geforce 6200, 6600 and 6800 models
- ATI X300, X700, X800
- Benchmarks : 3DMark05, 3DMark03, Half-Life 2, Doom 3, Far Cry,

Re:Article content is medicore at best
oops, the second link is wrong:
here is correction -
Re:Article content is medicore at best
i like digital-daily, they have some good benchmarks:
PCI-E 2005
ATI 2003
for example -
Re:closed source != bad alwaysSadly, you are living in the past.
ATI's GPUs have outperformed NVidia's for a couple years now in benchmarks and in real life. ATI has also stepped up to the plate with driver development, and now its Nvidia that lags behind. The drastic change in quality of ATI's products still shocks me (and it was a drastic enough change for me to actually spend money on an ATI product after swearing I'd never do so again).
Now you may wonder why (if you believe me) ATI's drivers went from suck to their current quality?
But one is as good as none. Nowadays, video cards based on ATI chips are being manufactured by 12 partnering companies, and the Catalyst driver (created by former developers of nVidia) demonstrates quite serious stability and performance and, like nVidia's Detonator, has turned into a symbol of stability and continuity.
Nvidia has been spiraling since the 3dfx asset acquisition. -
Re:Seems ATI got busted cheating again
When's it coming out? Any day now
How much does it cost? $925
Has any one besides THG benchmarked one?
Yanno,
If you annoying,
lazy, fanboy fuckers actually
took the time to look for the answers to your own fucking questions,
questions you wouldn't be so fucking annoying.
That's from a 30 SECOND FUCKING GOOGLE SEARCH.
I call that very biased. Benchmarking something thats not out yet. It's not out and that is why AMD wins.
ON WHAT FUCKING PLANET. Jesus. EVERYONE benchmarks stuff before it's released. Where the fuck have you been? AMD LOST. GET OVER IT.
That being said, I'm personally building a dual Opteron system on an MSI Master2 FAR board because $925 for a processor that's only marginally faster than the Opteron is ridiculous. Price/Performance is owned by AMD, but of course, they've owned that for quite a while now. -
Re:Not on a Mac it 'aint
PC mobos already come with digital audio output. SP-DIF has connector formats other than optical hookups, you know. So really, it's mac users playing catchup here, not PC makers. Besides, for the vast majority of computer users, digital output isn't a real issue. If it is, an Audigy Platinum is only a couple hundred dollars, and offers more audio connectivity than you can shake a stick at.

Re:How long til...
Quite soon. Just look at what can consumer-level GPUs produce in the real-time.

Re:So the reason this was posted was....
Uhm......no.
I'm just a regular Java developing shmoe located in frigid Canada, who first saw this article on The Register and since Slashdot is USA-centric, not to mention very supportive of anything to do with Linux for the people, I figured it was worth submitting since a lot of people might have missed it and would be very interested. I do not have anything to gain from this, and have no vested interest in either Slashdot, Lindows, Via or any other company mentioned in the post.
I hope this little reply helps shed some light on things, and my I suggest in the future that you take the time to write a proper link?
Oh, and for the record, while I agree an iBook would be close to the same thing, with better brand name recognition...it still costs $200 more, and weighs more too (I could be wrong on this one). Another reason why I submitted this story was that only 3 weeks ago I purchases a Toshiba Portege 4000, which cost about twice the price for similar features, and weighs a pound more! I was hoping somebody might see this and save a buck...although I must admit I'm very satisfied with my Portege.
