Re:CBC
I too listen to CBC radio.
My fave for news is indeed Radio One (690 kHz in Vancouver), but for music I prefer La Chaine culturelle, the French version of Radio Two. Some really cool music, now on the air in Vancouver (90.9 MHz).
This stuff is also all on DAB (the CBC/Radio-Canada networks are all on the same multiplex), one of the better-kept secrets of Canadian broadcasting. The transmitter on Mount Seymour is line-of-sight from my apartment, so I get good reception.

Re:Is this the same as the BBC offering?
The have had the same system (as the BBC) in several cities in Canada for several years now.
The US system is completely incompatible, of course. In 10 years when I drive my car across the USA/Canada border, my radio will stop working. Nice.

Lots of Toronto Stations Do Too
Here's the Digital Radio Canada industry website. You can find a list of them on there.
I don't know what exactly they're broadcasting as I don't have a receiver (nobody really does). I read on the CRTC website that the digital subchannels on some stations would be used for ethnic broadcasting.
I don't know what standard digital radio in Canada uses either.
Another curious thing is the Toronto Coverage Map. Certain areas in Scarborough apparently can't receive a signal. I'm not sure why that is. (Scarborough can receive all analog stations perfectly since most are broadcasting form the CN Tower.) -

Re:Already here in the UK but...
DAB has been available in Canada for some time now, they've been advertising for it now for over 2 years. Take a look at the DAB Canada site, it explains the technology and lists the stations that already broadcast a digital signal. I know you can buy car receivers ready for DAB signals already...

Satellite? Pheh!
If you want crisp, clear sound, ya gotta go with DAB, not satellite.
No idea if they have this in the US or not, though. It's in the middle of a nation-wide rollout here in Canada.

Re:What about Canada, and everyone else? DAB!You mean DAB. Digital Audio Broadcast.
It's a going concern in pretty well every civilized country outside the US.
Look at the world-DAB forum to get started.
The official launch of Digital Radio in Canada took place on 1st November 1999. Stations in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver have been operating since early 1999. For specific information on DAB in Canada, there's DigitalRadio.ca

Over-the-Air Digital in Canada dn EeropeDigital Broadcasting is already in full-effect in many places. All the major radio stations in Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver are already broadcasting in digital on the new "L" band using the Eureka DAB standard. Not many people have digital receivers yet, but that's not the point: the signal is there, and we can get it.
Many european countries have already gone this way as well.
Anyways, check out this site, DigitalRadio.ca, for more info.
