Re:What we do...
I have been using the Kaveman for quite some time now. My organization recently got a similar kvm from Lantronix . The nice features about these boxes is you can access them via local console, VNC, or web browser. I suppose if you need a headless KVM that will work with a laptop, you could just connect the NIC on the kvm to the NIC on your laptop. Another nice feature is the use of non-proprietary cables.

Already been done
There's a plenty of VGA to IP boxes out there:

Re:You need to simplify
The Kaveman product appears to be a nice network-capable kvm. Last I checked they were in the $2500 to $3500 range. You can conveniently sit at home and watch your machine reboot and alter BIOS settings just as if you were sitting in front of it.

Not THAT cheapThe lowest cost KVM over IP unit I've seen so far is about $2700 USD. That's not cheap, but if other solutions can't meet your needs, then this may be cheaper, and is certainly faster, than flying or driving there. (insert Total Cost of Ownership speech here).
This topic already came up on Friday. See my poorly formatted response there.
I've been checking the prices and availability of KVM over IP for about 4 or 5 months. The number of vendors and products has doubled and prices have dropped somewhat. I've got a deadline to purchase one by end of Q3, so I'll wait and watch the market a bit longer.
Such devices are very practical, especially when combined with remote power cycling functionality. (Digital V6 makes an all-in-one unit).

Kaveman - ~$3500
Not cheap at $3500, but better than the non-video card solutions mentioned...
Kaveman from Digital V6
They also have models with integrated KVM's for more, but I didn't inquire about the price of those, and they don't put prices on their web page. -
Re:Why no networked KVM?
Or, you could get a real networked kvm that isn't specific to a particular vendor.

Re:Why no networked KVM?
I think that this is close to what you're looking for.
