Pacifica Radio!
What the US needs first is a publicly funded broadcasting corporation that is at an arms length of government and receives no funding from the private sector. This is the only way to ensure media independence as the number of "media outlets" strink.
How aboutPacifica Radio! Not funded by government or corporate sponsors, just listeners. So they can (and do) say what they want. They have a few shows that are real gems, like Digital Village, and The Car Show right afterward. There's a lot of crap too, but it's great to have these voices represented somewhere. One of the most amusing was an organic gardening call-in show, which always turned into a discussion about how to grow pot. Damn hippies!
Pacifica/KPFK has a sister station in the Bay Area (KPFA), and I think one in Washington DC as well. -

Clarification on the dates of the Radio BroadcastFor those of us in L.A. who might want to catch the radio broadcast:
...will be playing Part One of the tape this Saturday and Part Two on April 29th
This Saturday *is* April 29th, right?
Digital Village's website clarifies it a bit, explaining that:Update!! A power transformer maintained by the City of Los Angeles went out this morning (April 22), keeping the station and Digital Village off the air.
Our interview with Neal Stephenson will be broadcast in its entirety, with Part One airing next week and Part Two airing the following week

Re:Gleick on Digital Village
We interviewed Jim Gleick last December. Here is that RealAudio interview if the Fresh Air one isn't enough for you. Alas, I don't recall any talk about plane crashes though. db

Frames are evil
Frames have always been, and will continue to be the worst design, breaking the back button, bookmarks, and just about anything else that the web was built on. Side note: I had never heard of this lady, till she was interviewed on digital village, and sadly I missed the interview. I immediately visited the site beforehand, and thought it was light on content.
