  1. Re:streaming music! on Chrysler To Offer Wireless Internet In 2009 Models · · Score: 1

Well, I don't use a proprietary player like the iPod, but I do play mp3s in the car already. But this just gives me what I already have. Being able to listen to webcasts will give me songs I don't have or haven't heard.

  2. Re:depending on what time you drive on Chrysler To Offer Wireless Internet In 2009 Models · · Score: 1

KCRW is good at times, though it too often feels like their selling artists on behalf of the labels. Thanks for plugging KPFK (I'm a programmer there), but the only music show I really enjoy is Travel Tips for Atzlan, which airs when I'm not driving. I used to love KXLU, but its coverage is horrible.

I don't know about shopping on Amazon, but oh how I'd love to listen to somaFM, WOXY, or Beyond the Beat Generation while I'm driving. Cuz the music broadcasters in LA choose is the suxors.

  8. Why only RealAudio on Neal Stephenson on Digital Village · · Score: 1
I am one of the hosts and producers of Digital Village. The actual site where the web site and audio files are stored is donated by a company called VPOP. I am not affiliated with VPOP beyond accepting their donation.

Simply put, we use RealAudio because I only have time to encode each program in one format and we've chosen to use the most widely used format. In the future we may have multiple formats, but for now it's just RA.

No, Unfortunately we won't be able to post the audio until after it airs on the station (they get first use since we recorded it with their equipment). It WILL be posted next weekend, barring another power outage. I did send an update to /. yesterday, hoping it would be received before this story went up. Alas, it was not meant to be. -db

  10. Get the Word Out! on Postscript: Who Owns The Hellmouth Posts? · · Score: 1

Jon, you know I support your efforts. I'm surprised that so many folks who post messages to a site that gets millions of hits are concerned about their words being gathered into a traditional print book. The importance of this is (and has alway been) getting the word out. How many non-Slashdotters were aware of the crap that is going on in schools in the name of "protecting the children" before the Hellmouth series started? How many are still clueless? Anything (well, almost anything) that increases awareness of this is a Good Thing. Thanks for doing that.

  11. Why Ask Jeeves Anything? on AskJeeves Interview · · Score: 2

I've been trying to figure out why AskJeeves gets so much press. It's probably just the name, and the idea of a natural language query. It's certainly not because it works. I've used it many, many times and I don't know if I've ever gotten an answer to my question. (Why did I use it? Really just to see if the stupid thing would work.) It's nice to see the aggregated results, but other sites (like Dogpile) work better and don't frame the results like AJ does.

All in all, a good idea that still doesn't work too good. -db

  13. Analog vs. Digital on On Preservation of Digital Information · · Score: 1

I agree that the problem of preservation isn't exclusive to digital media, but one of the big differences is that analog media tends to degrade MUCH better than digital media. True, old records get scratchy or warp, and tapes can have their oxide coating flake off, but at least there's some data available (ie. you can still listen to the recording through the clicks or dropouts. With digital media, it's often and all-or-nothing affair. Either it's in perfect shape or it's gone. Of course this isn't always the case (sometimes you can extract some digital data from a damaged source) but it's much more difficult than with analog media.

  15. Re:The author's fundamental mistake on Open Source's Achilles Heel · · Score: 2
Can someone think of an example Open Source project where the developers are not users?

But that's the wrong question, isn't it? The important question (for this discussion) is how many users aren't the developers of the software?

OF COURSE the developers should be users of their software! That's obvious. But I keep reading comments from people who seem to think that only developers have a right to suggest features.

This is incredibly short-sighted if Open Source/Free Software is be the dominant product. For years I've been hearing people say that they just want their computer to "get out of their way" so they can do their job. Now it seems many people here want these people to become programmers instead.

Of course, programming is a wonderful and usefull thing to learn, but not everybody wants to do that. Should Open Source/Free Software be limited to just geeks? I didn't think so.

  16. Fake News on NBC Upset About CBS's Digital Ethics · · Score: 5

The biggest problem here is that it's NEWS organizations which seem to be loving this technology. Is it right for journalists to fake out their viewers (in this case) even when it only involves slighting the competition? I don't think so. I think it's journalistist fraud.
