Re:Blow more smoke up our posteriors...
Out of curiosity, though, whose service do use that will allow you to be master?
I use DNS Made Easy.
For $30/year for up to 10 domains, it's a good value.

Re:Why dont I need word?
Thanks for pointing that out. I had to follow back the thread from your +5 post to find the offending post. I've just finished reporting the phish.
The host is a Windows Server somewhere in Antarctica (yea right, i'm sure) lmao. The DNS server is in the USA. Looks like they used networksolutions.
Somebody else might want to take the additional steps and contact http://www.dnsmadeeasy.com/ (the nameserver host) and file a report with them.

Re:diy??
You can do both
I run my own primary DNS server, but there are times that machine needs to be down, while the service machines are not. But, nobody could get to anything while the DNS server was down unless they had the name in their cache.
So, I signed up with DNS Made Easy for $15/year and get 3 DNS servers as secondary DNS, but those three are really many boxes around the world. For not much more, you can have them host all your DNS. They don't have API support, though, so it's not for the original question poster.

What Do You Need From an API?
I wouldn't exactly call it an API, but DNS Made Easy offers dynamic DNS in a way that seems pretty flexible to me. I haven't used it, but I've been very happy with their service for my static DNS entries - the service is quite flexible, the updates are REALLY fast, and I haven't ever had any problems. It costs me $5 a month, and it sounds like your needs would come to about $7 per month. You do have to pay up front, but I've been happy with them since... hmm, February. It feels like longer (I guess moving twice will do that to you).
DNS Made Easy's dynamic DNS and pricing.
Disclaimer: I'm not affiliated in any with DNS Made Easy, just a satisfied customer. They do have an affiliate program but... I don't want to look like a whore on Slashdot! Sigh, social norms.

Re:Slightly OT, need help getting beta set up..Have used EveryDNS.net's free service for 3+ years... no major issues... http://www.everydns.net/
However, dnsmadeeasy.com's pay-to-play memberships are simply the *best* hosted DNS service for propeller heads... http://www.dnsmadeeasy.com/s0306/price/dns.html
Welcome to EveryDNS.net -- our project to provide free dns services to the internet community.
We provide static DNS services as well as many advanced services such as Dynamic DNS resolution, Secondary service, AXFR service, and domain2web redirection. Of course, our primary service is free DNS.
Since our start in June of 2001 we have proved to be a reliable and secure service and we have no intention of changing that. A $15-$30 dollar donation is appreciated to help our services grow and improve. Thank you for your support of this free service.

Re:Go Daddy vs Register.com
It's hard to imagine that a company can charge $34.99 for a domain today when there are so many other companies out there that charge less than $10 per domain. Hopefully, Network Solutions and Register.Com will adapt their prices to compete, otherwise they may continue to lose a lot of market share.
If you are looking for DNS services, I would recommend using DNS Made Easy for only $4.95 a year. It's the cheapest I've found and they have done a great job for me over the last few years. It's also a good idea to separate your DNS services from your domain registrar in case you transfer your domain to another provider. This makes it real easy to just specify the name server at your new domain registrar and you are all set.
This could ultimately save you a lot of money in the long run because you only pay $8 per domain and then only $5 to have DNS for up to 5 domains. For 5 domains you would save up to $130 a year. -
DNSMadeEasy.com and DirectUpdate
I have been using DNSMadeEasy http://www.dnsmadeeasy.com/ for several years. I also use DirectUpdate http://www.directupdate.net/ to modify the dynamic records automatically.
DNSME has a free account using one of their domains, but for $5/yr you can host update to 5 of your own domains. You can update up to every 5 seconds depending on account type. They also have a referral program.
This combination works great and is (almost) free. DNSMadeEasy supports updates via HTTP/SSL for security and there are several perl/sh scripts for *nix, too.
I don't need a stupid quote in my signature. -
Re:Emergency use
No, the way to do that is to have a DNS server with small TTL (time to live) to switch IPs. Some cheap DNS Services allow you so set TTL, or you can run your own.

Network Solutions Redux
If this move improves Verisign/Network Solution's customer service for domain names and DNS management, I'm all in favor. Although that service has been pretty abysmal, I get the impression they are genuinely trying to do better. I signed up for their Advanced DNS Manager for one of my domains after 24-hour failure at DNSMadeEasy made me nervous. The overall reliability and redundancy of Network Solutions' DNS servers appears to be outstanding, but the site for editing DNS records has sometimes been unavailable. At $24/yr/domain, all parts of the system should work all of the time, in my always humble opinion. ---- This is not really a sig.
