Some companies are already ahead of the game
From the article, "you'll soon figure out that competing solely on price is a fool's game"
Quote below taken from DNUK's website
The DNUK Advantage
- We currently offer all the major GNU/Linux distributions on our systems; including Debian, Fedora, Mandrake, Red Hat, Slackware, SuSE and White Box
- Unlike other system builders we offer all GNU/Linux distributions at no charge with our systems and we also sell the retail boxed products as an option
- We can offer a degree of customisation for our customers that the large OEMs simply cannot match
- We pride ourselves on our customer support - all our technicians are experienced with GNU/Linux support
- Customers can communicate directly with the very same technicians that built their systems
- We do not use offshore support departments in India!

Recommended alternative for UK residents - DNUK
From the DNUK website:
"Digital Networks was formed in 1996 in Cheshire. Our aim from the start was to sell direct to the end user with dnuk.com being the focal point of our business. Digital Networks specialises in workstations, servers and notebooks running the Linux and Microsoft Windows operating systems."
Excellent systems! I currently own a DNUK Workstar W210
Highly recommended -
Detecting intrusions, not attacksMy key problem with current IDS systems is that they look for attacks, but I really want to know is if the attack is successful. The only use I have for attack counts is to justify the budget for security systems!
Let me suggest an alternative. Since you can build for $5000 or buy for under £3200 a terabyte disk store, why not record all network traffic in a rolling log for a few days or weeks. A background process can look for attack signatures, and see what the response was. So an IDS attack signature of "cat
/etc/passwd" won't be reported unless it appears that a password file actually was returned. The NSWC Shadow project is similar, but does not necessarily record all traffic.
One great advantage of having a historical log is you can see if you had been attacked, during the interval between an exploit being discovered and being notified with a new IDS signature. If you know you were not exploited, you save a lot of time not needing to check systems or reinstall to be on the safe side.
Anyone like to build me one?

Re:Digital Networks United KingdomIf you don't care about the pre-installed Linux, then you could pickup a Clevo laptop sold by a number of Tier 3 vendors, including AJP, Evesham, Mesh, Rock, Sigma, IPC and many, many others. The Quadra 150 appears to be the same as the Clevo 8500V.
DNUK have a good rep. but they aren't the cheapest.

Digital Networks United KingdomIf you are not too fussed about the size (or weight) of your laptop, and are looking for a cheap(er) option, then you could do a lot worse than checking out Digital Networks United Kingdom. I'm currently using one of their Quadra 150 boxes which will ship with Red Hat or Mandrake pre-installed and configured (although I've since dropped SuSE onto mine).
The only thing that doesn't work is the internal winmodem (although they will sell you and pre-configure a pcmcia modem) and the TV out. The box is 1G PIII and can be supplied with up to 1G of memory and has a very pleaant 1400x1024 TFT screen. My workstation has been sitting in a cupboard for some time now...

DNUK Sell Laptops with Linux preinstalled
One company that might be worth a look is DNUK. They sell laptops with Linux preinstalled. I bought one a week ago and so far I'm impressed. All the hardware works with Linux (apart from the TV-Out and the Winmodem, but there is a PCMCIA modem available) and it all works out the box, except it hangs on reboot, but halt works fine. So far the support staff have been very helpful. The only disadvantage is that my one is quite heavy (being 15" screen and inbuilt everything) but the 14" models are significantly lighter. Have a look at DNUK Laptops for more information.
