Actually the number is much higher than that
and it is called being dooced when you get fired for blogging on the Internet or using a social networking profile. I suppose you can call it getting dooced if you are not hired for the job because of your Internet profiles or activities.
Which is why I use the nickname Orion Blastar, instead of my real name for blogging, social networking, Internet activity, etc.
I am an old BBSer, and we always used handles or nick names instead of our real names.
A tip for those looking for a job:
Scrub your online profiles of all party pictures and comments about former employers. Or better yet just disable your real name profiles and use your nick name for a new profile. One that bares nothing to your real name or personal info. -
Re:Infuriated
It isn't a way for people to hang out. I have never used facebook to spend time with my friends. If people want to hang out online, use a chat room or instant messanger service. Personally, I use facebook to look at the profile of anyone I am going to tutor so that I know a little about them. I use facebook to look up the screen name of a classmate. I use facebook to look up the mailbox numbers of my friends on Valentines day. On someone's birthday, I leave them birthday wishes on their wall. Facebook is not used to "hang out". It is a powerful resource that people are incorrectly using. It is called common sense. Would your boss tolerate you posting terrible things on your personal website? No. He or she would probably fire you. Here is a website where that did happen to the owner. If students of a college are posting information about criminal activity, the school has every right to crack down on it.

The actual story
You should lighten up, it's just a blog. It's not like pictures of her little girl, dogs, flowers and friends are hurting anyone.
Anyways I guess the GP forgot to actually link to the story in case, she mentions it in the about section but doesn't link to the actual blog posts.
I started this website in February 2001. A year later I was fired from my job for this website because I had written stories that included people in my workplace. My advice to you is BE YE NOT SO STUPID. Never write about work on the internet unless your boss knows and sanctions the fact that YOU ARE WRITING ABOUT WORK ON THE INTERNET. If you are the boss, however, please don't be a bitch and talk with your hands. And when you order Prada online, please don't talk about it out loud, you rotten whore.
Anyways a quick Google turned up the post we're all looking for so here are the links from the archive (in chronological order):
- Tuesday, 12 February 2002 - I Have Something to Say (the post/rant that led to her getting fired)
- Thursday, 14 February 2002 - Rant Rant Rant Rant Rant Rant, Part 2 (at the bottom there's a little something)
- Tuesday, 26 February 2002 - Collecting Unemployment (the day she got fired)
- Wednesday, 27 February 2002 - Tell it to Their Face for Christ's Sake (she looks back on the week)
- Wednesday, 13 March 2002 - I'm a Slave 4 U(nemployment)

Re:This is nothing new
People have gotten into hot water or even gotten fired for years for blogging...check out http://www.dooce.com/ and read her story,
Slashdotted... But what I could pull from google's cache is that she is an ignorant bitch who is amazing full of herself. She was fired because she believed she could post whatever she wanted, wherever she wanted - and not pay the consequences. -
This is nothing new
People have gotten into hot water or even gotten fired for years for blogging...check out http://www.dooce.com/ and read her story, if you don't already know it. Being a team player vs. maintaining your own opinion about your company's strategy/your boss's bad moods/your apparent lack of advancement opportunities/etc. is a dilemma that is becoming more common. With blogs and other new Internet media, it's becoming much more tempting to try to have it both ways. Sometimes people don't just want to be a corporate shill.

Reality TV / Reality Websites
Blogging and social networking sites feed our society's need for three things. For the Bloggers it feeds our need for attention and validation. As a blogger, I readily admit to that. For the readers, it gives us glances into the lives and minds of others feeding the voyeuristic tendancy that reality television has brought out in our culture. How else can you explain the popularity of sites like http://dooce.com/, a site where Dooce writes about her everyday life? Just like the rise of reality shows that follow around regular people 24/7, blogging feeds the inner voyeur in all of us. Finally, the social networking sites make us feel connected to other people, a need often unfulfilled in real life where we work all day and never really connect with anyone. Speaking of connected, I have a Myspace message...

Re:Honestly confused:
I tried reading a few, including our resident's celebrity's, and I can't see the appeal to them for the reader ( sorry Clever ). I have enough going on in my life that I don't need to read about someone else's problems.
For the most part I'm in the same boat (and ironically I have my own). Those that read like the mundane topics they usually cover are quickly dismissed. But there are some writers that can actually make every day situations interesting and/or funny.
I have 3 blogs that fall into this category in my aggregator, one is a friend's, one is the aforementioned Mr. NickName (whose site is pretty broke this days), but the best one is Dooce. She simply has a knack for making me smile, while describing the the everday happenings in her life (not to mention she's a cutie). And recently she announced that her husband left his job and their income will be generated solely from her site.
There are thousands of other people out there talking about the same exact things on their blogs but it takes a certain amount of talent (and a williness to discuss constipation in great detail I suppose) to turn the mundane into entertainment.

Re:Getting fired
it is pretty easy to see that someone has been fired over blogging already
Also: Dooce, etc.

Re:Getting fired
Why limit it to Microsoft? Check out Dooce. She coined the term dooced: to lose one's job because of one's website. Or do a plain google search.

dooced!
