Re:Warcraft 3
Of course, the monsters are still ugly,
Not sure what you're using for OpenGL doom but check out this link. (I just installed jdoom/doomsday one week ago today actually.) There's a monster model pack you can download to get better looking monsters. There's also a 180MB texture pack you can download to improve the scenery. -
Re:Owner's view
Doom deathmatch was great, but Quakeworld deathmatch is a definite improvement, with internet play, true 3D graphics, and free aka mouse look. As I understand it, there are various open source projects that have added these features to Doom. Most people don't want a new game, they just want their old favorite game with a few improvements. Check out Doom 2 with new high resolution textures and the JDoom project which adds true 3D graphics to Doom!
Compare those screenshots side by side with screenshots of the original DOS Doom. It is the same gameplay you love, but definitely better graphics! You will need more hardware than you used back with the original DOS Doom, but you won't need much by today's standards. -
Re:how do you describe a fly?
try jdoom
In all honesty you obviously know absolutely nothing about the subject.
In original doom the mobs were sprites. They are not 3d entities. The maps were lit and rendered in an extremely processor intensive way so that when the time came to display them the CPU wasn't bogged down in light mapping.
Why would someone in 1993 decide to include bump mapping and environment mapping and real time lighting and smoke data to a computer game that wouldn't be able to be seen for 10 YEARS!!!
And you are wrong, the industry did evolve in that direction, well two actually. OpenGL and DirectX are systems where the scene is described at a higher level precisely for the reasons you mention [although usually it's for the requirement to degrade gracefully rahter than extend shelf life]
I'm glad that Doom & Heretic et. al. look outdated because I want the next crop of cutting edge stuff.
You cen bet that no-one will be including smell & touch data in their games to extend the shelf life of these products when such technologies exist.

jDoom
If you're on a Windoze system, why not try jDoom? It's got great graphics from the screenshots.

Re:How can I run those?ZDoom
Legacy Doom
JDoomThey all use OpenGL and have cool features like dynamic lightmaps, transparency, support for high resolutions, texture filtering, full mouselook, etc etc. There are other projects too, but these three are most mature AFAIK.

Getting an nvidia? 128 or 64? Read this...
Here's something you should consider before buying a 128 MB GeForce Ti-series card. There are four choices you can make right now:
Ti-4600: Highest price, best features, 10.4 GB/s memory bandwidth, 650 MHz memory clock
Ti-4400: High price, excellent features, 8.8 GB/s memory bandwidth, 550 MHz memory clock
Ti-4200 (1): Decent price, great features, will handle BF1942 and UT2003, 64 MB limit, 8 GB/s memory bandwidth, 500 MHz Memory clock
Ti-4200 (2): High price, great features, slowest out of all 4 thanks to memory speeds, will handle BF1942 and UT2003, 128 MB limit, 7.1 GB/s memory bandwidth, 444 MHz memory clock.
Basicly, on the 4200's, if you go for double the memory for almost double the price, you will see a performance hit.
After my research (urged on by PNY's box), I decided that by the time I need 128 Mhz, I'll also want the features of a chip beyond the current Nvidia line.
Of course, if you want anything that performs beyond the 4200, then why bother reading anything here in slashdot? You're getting at least 128 MB on your card ;) .....
So, this weekend, I found a 64 MB Ti 4200 for $129, and it printed out a $30 rebate at the counter. Happy day, indeed. I spent the rest of the weekend playing OpenGL-boosted Doom and Hexen.
BTW, if you are completely out of the know, but love gaming, do not but the MX series of cards. They are not for you. -
Re:Doom Patch to follow?
If you have a fast enough machine to handle it, check out jDoom, and you can play Doom/Doom2/Any other WADS in full 3D, with 3D models replacing the old sprites also. The only minus to jDoom is right now it has pretty bad netcode so multiplayer isn't that good, but for playing regular Doom, it's great. =)

Re:Doom Patch to follow?
You could do that in Doom. It's called vertical autoaim =P Oh, and check out JDoom for OpenGL-powered Doom. It's not quite the same as Tenebrae but nice anyhow.
