Classic Shooters Heretic and Hexen Released Under GPL
phanboy_iv writes "Fans of both of the Raven classics, Heretic and Hexen, have been trying for almost a decade to convince Raven Software to release engine source code for the games under the GPL, much like the DOOM engine on which both of them are based. Well, they finally did it! Source code is available at Sourceforge. Both of these games have had the source available for a while, but under a restrictive license that hindered ports and modifications. Now, thanks to dedicated fans, that's no longer a problem." -
Ten Years Of Doom Celebrated
mmx writes "GameSpy is partway through a week-long feature celebrating the 10th anniversary of seminal FPS Doom: 'Ten years ago today, Jay Wilbur uploaded an executable to the overloaded University of Wisconsin FTP that pretty much changed first person shooter games forever. He was having trouble because it was packed with rabid DOOM fans, slavering over the demo's imminent release. Eventually Wilbur had to have them all kicked off, and only then did he manage to get the roughly two-megabyte file online.' GameSpy's Doom timeline is pretty interesting, and Doomworld has also started a special anniversary feature. Happy birthday, Doom... and thank you, id software." -
Helms Deep Battle Recreated In Doom
Failure Guy writes "Its been over five years now since id released the source code to Doom. What have people been doing with the source in the time since then? Apparently, recreating the battle of Helms Deep!. Acclaimed mapper Cyb recently released his Helms Deep reenactment wad. You can find screenshots here." The IRC review on Cyb's site is ... mixed. -

License Cocktail With GPL In Doom
Rob wrote in to say: "There is an interesting news item on Doomworld about all the different licenses under which the sourceports of Doom are distributed -- at once! According to this article, some source ports use up to three different licenses, among them the GPL. So doesn't this make it GPL'd? But what about the other licenses? Do the authors have to stick to a single license and dispose of code which is covered by another license?" -

Doom Source Now Under GPL
Scipius wrote to us with the news that Game OverLaird John Carmack has re-licensed the Doom source code under the GPL. Things like this make my heart beat with joy. -
How Doom got its Name (from John Carmack interview)
Yumpee writes "DOOMWorld interviewed John Carmack recently. The site itself is a bit sluggish but Blue's News had this snippet on how Doom got its name: Carmack: There is a scene in "The Color of Money" where Tom Cruise shows up at a pool hall with a custom pool cue in a case. "What do you have in there?" asks someone. "Doom." replied Cruise with a cocky grin. That, and the resulting carnage, was how I viewed us springing the game on the industry. "
