"How can it displace the need for antivirus when it can't stop most of the threats?" - by Coren22 (1625475) on Wednesday September 23, 2015 @01:44PM (#50584363)

"Bob & weave" hypocrite: You FAIL, lol... apk
See subject pot calling a kettle black hypocrite. You're using admin priveleges (the "holy terror" according to you no less) in a program!
* My program utterly DISPLACES THE NEED FOR ANTIVIRUS since it blocks you getting infected in the 1st place (negating the need for antivirus @ all) & then it also stops botnets from communicating with their C&C servers even IF you get an infestation...
APK
P.S.=> Plus, face facts: Symantec ADMITTED they don't work vs. modern threats (most all if not all ARE from online, which my program negates as noted above) nowadays too -> http://dottech.org/157355/syma...

I overturned 7 false positives easily... apk
See subject: NOD32, Comodo, McAfee, Sophos, EmsiSoft, ArcaVir, & Qihoo360 rescinded those false positives, & the link below is further proof of that as well!
I proved that they found my 32-bit COMPRESSED model of my program a "virus" yet NOT my 64-bit one - & the folks @ MalwareBytes' hpHosts (who helped me thru this no less & HOST + RECOMMEND my program -> http://hosts-file.net/?s=Downl... ) have its sourcecode WHICH IS THE EXACT SAME IN BOTH MODELS (except for resource strings that say "32-bit" vs. "64-bit" to differ both models in their GUIs) so they knew they couldn't say 1 is a virus, the other not, when they're exactly the same.
Face facts (since you downmodded the last time I posted this to try to "hide it" since you failed -> http://linux.slashdot.org/comm... )
* You FAIL, troll (Khyber posting by ac no doubt)...
(Some of the "rules" the fools @ these companies use aren't right, & I've proved that above on COMPRESSED EXECUTABLES ALONE - some do it if you use a WinRAR SFX installer, which is NOT A "VIRUS" EITHER... most everyone in the security community knows it!)
FUNNIEST PART IS HOW THE ANTIVIRUS MAKERS TRY TO SCREW EACH OTHER OVER THAT WAY -> http://www.theregister.co.uk/2...
As well as how SYMANTEC literally ADMITTED ANTIVIRUS IS NOT VERY EFFECTIVE AS A DEFENSE ANYMORE too -> http://dottech.org/157355/syma...
* Whereas my program (proven clean MANY times shown above AND below too), stops you from getting infected in the 1st place by blocking known sources of infestation...
APK
P.S.=> As to Khyber? He's an imbecile (I shot him down easily on many points regarding that & other technical matters)-> http://linux.slashdot.org/comm... which you downmodded to try "hide" too, Khyber posting as ac now... apk

AntiVirus' ADMITTED inefficacy... apk
"You still have yet to prove the point that your shitty hosts file program is somehow better than virus scanners" - by Coren22 (1625475) on Wednesday September 02, 2015 @12:12PM (#50444503)
See subject & this http://dottech.org/157355/syma...
* Hosts BLOCK known malicious sites that infect you BEFORE THEY CAN...
(Ads included, possibly biggest infector of them all, & better than "almostALLAdsBlocked" souled-out & crippled by default http://slashdot.org/comments.p... by a country mile in terms of abilities & doing FAR MORE with FAR LESS CPU + RAM resources consumed from a faster mode of operations in kernelmode vs. less cpu serviced usermode & with less messagepassing overheads too)
Host-domain name served exploiters are BY FAR the majority - for the rest? I use my firewall rules table (for those served by IP, & then ICANN/IANA block those out quickly, & they're not "mobile" like host-domain served ones are, which is WHY they are used more by malwaremakers/botnet herders etc.).
Lastly: UNLIKE INEFFECTIVE ANTIVIRUS? Hosts SPEED YOU UP, vs. slowing you down & in 2 ways (hardcoded favs where you spend most time online, resolving faster locally from system RAM cached & ADBLOCKING (not crippled by default like adblock/abp+).
APK

"Hosts files solve a very small subset of computer problems" - by Coren22 (1625475) on Wednesday September 02, 2015 @12:12PM (#50444503)
Ahem: I never ONCE said "hosts cure all ills", did I? Show me where I did (in fact that's how I dusted BarbaraHudson & Hairyfeet in fact, years ago: THEY TRIED TO SAY I DID & couldn't show it) - & @ least I created something that does all of what I always note in hosts!

Aside from being useless...
...as antivirus suppliers themselves have admitted, anti-virus software only slows your system down (dramatically)

Android has the same ability
I'm glad Apple provides this, and it's a nice differentiator for them since Google needs to track users to maintain their profits while Apple just wants to sell you devices.
Android has a similar switch to limit ad tracking, they just call it interest based ads and make it easier to find even.
However it says nothing about what Google themselves may still track, to me these switches are all about what third parties can get from you.

Verizon shouldn't be an option
Remember that Verizon is claiming in court that it has a free speech right to censor all Internet traffic across its networks. That's right, their censorship of your free speech is their free speech. And corporations, of course, have stronger free speech rights than individuals. So claims Verizon. Before federal courts that sometimes think like that themselves.
Personally, I use Sprint's networks, but through Ting. Their 3G coverage is decent in the more populated parts of rural New England (that is larger towns: good, and not overburdended; truly rural: mostly lacking). And when I go into the big cities, WiMAX works fine from most locations (and where it doesn't due to local geography, 3G is okay). We have two Android phones, use the no-extra-charge tethering frequently, and run a total bill as low as $20 a month - as compared to, what, approaching $200 a month for the two phones if on Verizon's or Sprint's plans?
I was on Sprint for voice for many years before this. They were always good. Every customer service call I made to them was well handled. I've only gone to Ting because for our usage patterns (limited voice, no texting, Internet by phone for e-mail and static web pages - our streaming needs are met by DSL at home) result in such huge savings there, while still giving us phones we can tether from.

Re:True #1 Feature!
Really, and how do you do this without having to use a 3rd party paid app?
Why would you think that it would have to be a paid app? There are heaps of free programs available for Windows for doing stuff like this. My first search on Google found a couple of examples to get the start menu back.
Or you could just hack up your own start menu without any extra programs.
This concept is not new. There was a program called Calmira that made Windows 3.1 look like Windows 95. Have a look at this screenshot!

Re:Let's get this out of the way, shall we?
Glad to help, as I tell my customers I do my damnedest to make it so they won't need me except for new hardware upgrades or new PCs. If it is a new install might I suggest another couple of additions to make your life easier? I'd add Winutilities Pro Free which thanks to that link is not only free but comes with free updates, and allows you to easily automate HDD and reg defrags, reg cleaning, shortcut cleaning, basically gets rid of the cruft that builds up in Windows over time. And I would go to Ninite on first boot, which gives you a web based unattended installation of most of the popular apps, like Flash, FF, and
.NET, along with media players like iTunes and IMs. Really cuts down on the time it takes to get a desktop up and running. So there you have it. You use the above links with the earlier Comodo links I gave, and you'll have your desktop up and running in no time at all.

Re:System tuning...
It sounds like what you are wanting is App Booster. It has easy to set profiles, turns on/off unwanted services at the click of a button, has include/exclude lists. Really easy to set it up to boost a particular program and get a little more oomph out of that older box.
That said what I give my customers is Tuneup Utilities. This is a link to the free 2008 version but I of course sell them the latest version. Both will automatically defrag, cleans and defrags the registry (and unlike many tools out there it doesn't go nuts and clean out useful keys), removes broken shortcuts, etc. A really great tool for "set it and forget it" computing. The 2010 version really rocks for Windows 7 as well as XP. I never have to clean or defrag, it has one push "turbo mode" which turns off background crap for gaming, really nice.
With this along with some of the free apps they offer at Ninite it makes it beyond simple to set up a new PC for a customer. Just install the OS, run autopatcher, run Ninite, and install the latest Tuneup Utilities, and they are pretty much good to go. Maybe an hour's worth of setting users and tasks and it is pretty much a toaster. Just start the PC and no thinking required. That is why my customers are happy little campers, no needing a CS degree to take care of their PC, just run and go. Once I let a computer loose in the wild pretty much the only time I see it again is when they want to add new hardware. It makes them happy, makes my job easier, its a win/win!
