Re:Vista changed a lotNew changes are worthwhile too; a bad video driver should (in theory) never be able to bring a system crashing down like in XP, for instance. Certainly. But only in theory. 29% of Windows Vista crashes caused by NVIDIA drivers: http://www.downloadsquad.com/2008/03/28/29-of-windows-vista-crashes-caused-by-nvidia-drivers/

Let it never be said that Microsoft doesn't take good care of its loyal customers!

Re:1.77 Trillion Dollars?
I suppose posting the related article will make the above comment make a bit more sense:

MS Office formats
Once you decide you must have MS Office you're pretty much locked into a Windows environment. Sure, you COULD get an apple, but that never really made sense from a cost/benefit perspective. As long as the world speaks ".xls" ".doc" ".eml" ".ppt" etc., we'll be using Windows.
Not only does MS have an Office version for Macs but new Macs come with a 30 day trial version. Actually MS has used the Mac version of Office to experiment with, if something new didn't work right in the Mac version it wouldn't be in the Windows version. Though I haven't and won't use it, the MacBook Pro I got about 4 months ago has Office 2004. The suite includes, looking at the Office subfolder in the Applications folder, Entourage, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.

Re:Because
Apple could have dropped that visual voicemail feature, which is a far better alternative than being tethered to AT&T. Not to mention opens up the market to any provider that uses GSM (ie, most of the world). At this point, to sell iPhones in the middle east, Apple would have to make an agreement with each provider (and trust me, they'd wanna sell iPhones down there. Especially in the gulf countries, those guys change phones every 6 months to stay 'hip'. Cash cow.).
Apple could develop their own service. (ie http://www.downloadsquad.com/2005/12/15/gotvoice-g et-all-your-voicemails-online/ or http://www.downloadsquad.com/2007/03/02/simulscrib e-transcribes-voicemail-into-text/) charge a monthly fee for it, and call it a day. -

Re:Google already done it... indirectly
Google is ahead of them, this is MS's response. Platypus and more on Platypus.

Re:Unfair standard?
You do not need to install Windows Desktop Search to search in Outlook 2007 in XP. In fact, I opted against it and unticked the checkbox for it to stop asking me.
You can still use the traditional Advanced Find by visiting the Tools Menu -> Instant Search -> Advanced Find, or CTRL-SHIFT-F, or probably a whole pile of context menus. -
Technically...

g -windows-xp-pro-on-8mhz-pc-with-20mb-ram/
This machine is capable of running XP...but I wouldn't want to. Microsoft will probably win on the technicalities, but (IMO) ethically, they're in the wrong. -
PC Relocator by AlohaBob. Au Revoir Bob by Microso
I believe that's the secretive vista transfer microsoft has had in it's pocket for awhile, it seems the last two years over there have had them buying and transitioning a lot of good apps to windows branded products, which have adobe and mcaffe/norton running around.

Microsoft Word for DOS is now free as in beer
Microsoft makes Word 5.5 for DOS available as free-beer software.
They had to fix a year 2000 bug and decided to give the software away rather than trying to sell it.
Word for DOS 5.0 was a really nice piece of work, although in my opinion the interface had started to go downhill by 5.5 (trying to copy the Windows interface too much).

Re:Format?
On this page, there is a link to an amazon page. On that page, there is a link to "download the unbox video player", so I do believe the format will be somewhat proprietary. Amazon may take that page down, but I still saw what I saw.

http://www.downloadsquad.com/2005/11/23/sony-could -use-xcp-to-protect-its-customers-but-wont/
Sony could use XCP to protect its customers, but won't
Spyware researcher Ben Edelman says that XCP, the software at the heart of Sony's rootkit fiasco, could also be used to inform Sony's customers that their computers have been compromised. Sony doesn't know whose computers are infected by their rootkit, but the XCP player software includes code for automatically fetching a banner from Sony's servers. Sony could easily use this to display a recall notice to the rootkit's victims, but are they going to? I seriously doubt it. While the whole affair has been gaining more and more traction with the media, Sony knows that the majority of its customers will never hear about any of it, and they want to keep it that way. While their recall was intended to be viewed as a good-faith gesture (and, indeed, there may be some actual good faith in there somewhere), the last thing Sony wants is for every Switchfoot fan to know how badly their record company screwed up their computer. -

Not really news now is it?
In fact, I blogged about this a week ago on Downloadsquad. I was also informed (loudly) that MS's start predates Google's homepage.
And this was the 3rd time it was up on Digg, so to answer many of the same comments on here, I'm going to copy my comments below:
Some facts:
1. yes, MS has owned the domain since 1996, but only launched start 1 in the past year (look it up on their beta page, link at the bottom of the start).
2. the MS start page predates Google's
3. it says it's owned by MS at the bottom and is an incubation/testing area for technologies... RTFA please
4. MS might not like Apple, but you can chalk the incompatibilities up to Safari's crappy handling of the X in Ajax... many other ajax sites don't work properly in Safari (props to Google on going the very long extra mile and getting gmail to work tho)
5. looks like this will always be a preview (and didja notice /. in the feeds? kinda funny)
