Cisco 2950T-48 Switches
One of the photos shows a Cisco 2950T-48 that provides 48 10/100 ethernet ports with 2 GigE uplink ports. This seems like a simple setup for lots of tables. Drop a switch at each table and feed run one cable back to the core switch for the area. If Cisco provided 300 of these switches that gives you 14400 100meg ports for users. Then a few core switches with a stack of non-blocking GigE ports and some 10GB or 40GB uplink ports to the core routers. Easy... I'm sure several companies (or universities) had similar setups. The amazing thing is the built it as a temporary setup. The real job is providing safe power and cooling for all users.... maybe next time they can provide PoE for everyone and require "green" computers! http://www.dreamhack.se/dhw11/files/2011/11/20111122_M1n1M0nk3y_Building_DreamHack_0226.jpg

Re:Connectivity
I suspect the chances of all 12,000 people using their internet bandwidth at the same time was pretty likely. Especially since they asked people to try and max it out at a specific time to set a utilization record.

Re:Insurance?
That's an interesting question, but it's also possible to sign off on the entry that everybody is expected to have insurance for their own property.
If it's possible to get a security guard for a reasonable amount of money then do so, but the need for a guard will probably more be to bounce unwanted guests than to keep order at the party.
Here in Sweden we have a recurring LAN party called Dreamhack and the crime level there is rather low. And the risk of injury is also relatively low. Someone may trip over a cable or something, which can happen just about anywhere anyway. Just have a reasonable first aid kit just in case.

Re:They tried this a few years ago with Unisys?
Think Unisys lent Dreamhack one some years ago for the show, but not "out in the wild".

not just a LAN gaming party
what I like about these events in Europe is that they are also demo parties, like Assembly in Finland.
There is some info on Dreamhack's site about the demoscene portion of the party.
All in all, being stuck on the other end of the planet (I'm in New Zealand), I'm very jealous of the demo sceners and the parties that go on in Europe. -
Dreamhack
Ask the http://www.dreamhack.se/ guys. Probably the biggest LAN in the world at 6500 participants..

That's puny!
1100 guests??? bah!
Around here that's considered a failiure or good for your first try.
This easter the worlds largest lan party will be The Gathering with 5100 guests. Free tickets are still available if you are coming from outside Europe and normally priced tickets are available for people from Europe, but outside Norway.
I know because we sold the first 4300 tickets in 6 hours via PTN and there are over 1000 people on the waiting list for the rest of the tickets.
The worlds second largest party is DreamHack in sweden with around 5000 guests.
Assembly in Finland is also quite large with over 3000 guests.
Due to general anti-piracy hysteria in Denmark The Party (the worlds first large party) had less than 1000 guests this year, down from over 3000 a few years ago.

Too small for me..
Here in Sweden we have DreamHack, which is about six times larger than what's mentioned in the article. It also happens to be the largest party of this kind in the world
:-).
