I've maintained a PayPal link associated with my science fiction short stories and (small collection of) photos, with an explanation that somebody can show appreciation if they like my works just by establishing a PayPal account. With $5 for me and $5 for them (and no out-of-pocket expense for them), it's an easy (and profitable) way to show appreciation, right? It's optional, of course -- the content can be seen/read for free.

Have I received even one tip? Nope. Maybe my writing and photography sucks. Maybe not enough people are even seeing my work. Or maybe tipping via PayPal doesn't work, at least not the way I'm trying. Oh well, it's a good thing I'm not publishing that way to make a living! I do it mostly in the hopes that others will enjoy my stuff... If I end up with a few bucks, I won't complain, but that's not the driving motivation.

The left doesn't know what's right anymore.

I have come to disbelieve that anyone with any significant political power actually holds any measureable political beliefs. "Left vs Right" or "Conservative vs Liberal" doesn't exist anymore (if it ever did); at least now, it is only a facade to serve as entertainment for those unable or unwilling to think for themselves. The 'two sides' are one group comprised of individuals concerned, first and foremost by a vast margin, with their own personal success. Politics and representation of those who (often-ignorantly) put and keep them in power be damned; a comfortable life and a secure, fat paycheck are the only real goals.

We may be witnessing them being torn between their liberalism and their desire to make a buck.

I doubt that their claimed liberalism exists, and this issue is simply further evidence to support my belief.

Perhaps it is because I do have strong political beliefs that I tend toward being a Libertarian rather than supporting the Republicrats. But I do not belong to any political party at the moment, and I am not yet prepared to believe that a Libertarian in power would hold true to the party's political ideals any more than a Republicrat in power.

The real question is, when will those in the Open Source (and/or Free Software) movement(s) learn to take the new power in their hands, given freely by the masses pouring themselves onto the Internet, to wrest the court of public opinion in line with their position?

On the university campus where I used to work, the last office I had (after some rather uncomfortable locations, like next to the dish washing area of the main cafeteria) was in "the old steam plant." It was an old brick building, and our office space was spacious, open, and quiet. It was a relaxing place to work. (The fact that it looked out on a lawn where girls would sunbathe during the summer didn't hurt... {smirk}) The only real down side, location wise, was that a carpentry shop next door would sometimes fill the halls with potent chemical smells -- enough to give you a headache at times. But that was rare enough.

I'd give up my current desk in cube land in a heartbeat for a nicer office like that again.

This led me to wonder what will become of the terabytes of garbage that will be dumped into the Publius system by trolls, spammers, flamers, first posters, and the other mutant fuana of the net.

But isn't the Publius system based on a "pull" (request/response) architecture, much the same as the Web itself? If so, "spam" in Publius should be no worse than a Web page with "spam" -- it isn't affecting anybody who doesn't request it. (Indeed, the use of the term "spam" for a non-push publishing method seems counter to the meaning of the term itself.)

It's interesting to see people referring to games from the early 90s as "classic games." (Not referring to the article, which talked about 20 year old games.) Seeing Commander Keen discussed as a classic game makes me feel old in much the same way as knowing that people in college today were in diapers when I was "serving my nation" overseas... I'm not old, really... (Gotta keep telling myself that.)

This can backfire, though. I've had some luck doing it, but all too often (perhaps due to picking the wrong person who tries to make senseless suggestions in complete ignorance) I get so annoyed trying to explain the background that I have to walk away before I can even describe the problem. If you're gonna talk it through, definitely pick someone who will sit and listen without trying to suggest things (at least, not until you're really done with your own thought processes -- and if you're gonna stick around for any possible suggestions, pick someone in the first place who is clued-in enough to give decent ones).

Maybe it's just me/my situation, but the spouse is usually the wrong person for this sort of thing. Maybe because they try to be helpful even if there's no real chance of that. (Having a techie for a spouse might help, I suppose...)

Section 48 of this request states that we supposedly "have received notice through the MPA and refused to remove the information at issue". This is absolutely false! We have never received any such request (from the MPA or anybody else for that matter) and we obviously were not given the opportunity to refuse! Either Jared Bobrow needs to go back to law school or the DVD CCA needs to get a new firm. This is the kind of sloppy work that could get an important document thrown out.

Explanation on legality of this information

The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.

Attention www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files. That list of mirrors has been replaced with a page reading "This site has been taken down for legal reasons." Here's what the maintainer put on the site the day it was shut down:

NOTE (Thu, Nov 11, 12:17pm EST): I've recently been informed that a law firm which is likely to be one that would try get these mirrors taken down has been visiting this mirror site as well as others. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.

There's this great new way of finding what you want -- just type in Internet Keywords, and there you are! Right to where you wanted to go, every time.

(Those who know my views on RealNames know I'm only kidding.)

Having a database visible to a search engine depends greatly on the complexity of the database itself. Something simple (like the MySQL/Perl-driven Imprinted Products Source List ) can be given a default list-everything URL that doesn't look like a script. As size and complexity increase, of course, that isn't feasible (or even desirable), but it might be adapted to display a representative SQL View of a complex database, with sufficient content to give the search engine the "meat" it needs.

Explanation on legality of this information:

The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.

Attention

www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files. That list of mirrors has been replaced with a page reading "This site has been taken down for legal reasons." Here's what the maintainer put on the site the day it was shut down:

NOTE (Thu, Nov 11, 12:17pm EST): I've recently been informed that a law firm which is likely to be one that would try get these mirrors taken down has been visiting this mirror site as well as others. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.

Perhaps a broader view of what constitutes a market would help you understand the statement. There is, without a doubt, an Open Source market, just as there is a Kids-and-parents-playing-in-the-park market. And a Senior-citizens-attending-church market. That no money changes hands does not necessarily imply that it is not a market. Additionally, presence in a market -- even in a self-proclaimed "leading position" in a market -- does not imply a stranglehold on said market or any given resource.

An example might help illustrate this. Let's go back to the market of children and parents playing in city parks, and let's assume that a company has managed to obtain 75% of billboards that are visible from all parks. They can rightfully claim to have a leading position in that market -- but it does not restrict the market in any way. Other billboards can be constructed. Entire new parks can be developed. The market might leave city parks and head to the beach instead. There is nothing inherently wrong with seeking that leading position in a given market, and it doesn't necessarily mean anything negative for the market.

Visualizations such as these are not only intriguing to techies, they can be very valuable educational tools for non-techies, to help overcome the "magic black box" syndrome that gives rise to so much stupid behavior. Even though a non-technical person may miss 99% of the meaning of any given visualization of the Internet, the mere viewing of it can give a non-techie that critical clue that there is something specific to the Internet. You don't just double-click the AOL icon on your desktop, type an e-mail, and it magically appears at the destination -- instead, specific "things" are happening. By bringing it out of the mystical realm, dealing with problems (like said e-mail bouncing back) naturally becomes an exercise in analysis, rather than frustration that the magic isn't working.

As much as I hate analogies between computers and cars, I'll use one. A non-mechanic does not throw his/her hands up in the air when their car suddenly dies in the middle of a traffic jam. S/He may not know much about the car, but you can bet (or at least hope) that one of the first things they'll check is their gas gauge. If they fail to find the real cause, they may still feel frustrated, but not so much as if they had absolutely no clue why the vehicle stopped. That tiny first bit of awareness is critically empowering; without it, they are a slave to their own ignorance.

Visualizations of the Internet won't lead the non-techie to run down to the local electronics shop to buy a breakout box for analyzing network failures, but they can break the shackles of misguided and unhelpful notions of "magic black boxes." So do your Mom, neighbor, child's teacher, etc. a favor and share these and similar visualizations with them!
