Re:Makes sense
To figure this stuff out, we gotta jump ahead to the endgame. The ultimate capitalist dream has been realized. Robots produce absolutely everything: food, clothing, and housing. And all the robots are owned by Scrooge McDuck, because he drove everyone else out of business with his superior robots.
McDuck is now fabulously wealthy and doesn't technically need to employ anyone. The populace is hungry, of course, but they don't have anything to offer McDuck in return... or do they? I've seen this scenario play out dozens of times in simulations. A single entity controls the resources needed for survival, and the people have too much time on their hands. The results are rarely pretty.

Re:Actually, it does !
Not a Dwarf Fortress veteran then?
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/i...I can only imagine the horrors that nuclear carp could unleash.

Ahh Dwarf Fortress...
Where else can you drain the ocean, trap whales in lead cages, load them into lead minecarts, and send them careening down the steep, steep slope to hell as a kinetic anti-demon weapon?
Oh, and if it weren't for DF, there would be absolutely no source for the solid density of Saguaro wood online (it's 430 kg/m^3 for anyone wondering).

I am not a doctor, but I play one on TV
I have watched a lot of David Attenborough but that doesn't make me a zoologist or archeologist. A well-informed-by-pop-media layperson is not the same as someone who does a thing.
And no, Dwarfputing does not mean you have mastered both worlds.

Unvanquished, Tribes Ascend, Dwarf Fortress, EVE
Unvanquished is a successor to Tremulous a free, open source game that was originally a quake 3 mod (but has been its own standalone game for quite some time). It is an asymmetric FPS, aliens vs humans that has some similarities to Natural Selection, but has been around much longer and is much better balanced.
Tribes Ascend is a good free-to-play FPS based upon the original Tribes series. Jetpack skiing with explosive discs is fun.
Dwarf fortress is a surprisingly detailed simulation game about dwarves, who build fortresses. So yeah. Losing is fun.
EVE Online is an MMO that is unique in having an impressively detailed economy, and largely lives and breathes by player-directed drama. It also boasts some rather good parody songs like this one.

Re:human germs don't like higher body temp
That's nothing. Anything bellow is 10000 is freezing to dwarven physicists.

Re:Yeah sure
It works for dwarves.
Clearly, what's being prototyped here is a hybrid of Dwarf Fortress and Kerbal Space Program.

Re:Magnetite?
You can still use limonite or hematite i believe. You should also consider upgrading your facilities to produce something nicer.

Re:Hazen

Re:Actually
Dwarf Fortress?
Fiendishly, breathtakingly complex world-simulation engine from Bay 12 Games. Comes equipped with "Fortress mode" city simulator, "Adventure mode" Roguelike play, and "Arena mode" battle sandbox. The wiki is pretty much required reading.

Re:The goal often isn't fun
Tarn Adams disagrees with your generalization of game designers. He cares very much about fun.

Re:Pots
Yes, but if they are earthenware they need to be glazed first.

Re:reinventing the wheel
Dwarf Fortress did it better in my opinion. Using fluids you can construct literal logic gates!

Re:amazing use of resources
At least the comparisons are between Minecraft and Bitcoins. If the comparisons were between Bitcoins and Dwarf Fortress, you'd have to worry that someone will tunnel through an adamantine tube and unleash the hordes of Hell somewhere around BC 20,999,998.
