    The underlying map data is from Earth Satellite Corporation's Naturalvu 2000 off the shelf 15 meter resolution package. You can read about it at http://www.earthsat.com/ I just like giving a shout out to the people who did the hard stuff. God knows you won't hear it from google. I bet they didn't even include a mention of that in their press release. [-)

    "Google is a for-profit company that creates software solutions for the public using public data... If the governments continue to close up our free access to information I will continue to get annoyed."

    The satellite imagery layer in Google Maps is not public data. It uses a propietary product called EarthSat NaturalVue from Earth Satellite Corporation and high-resolution satellite imagery from Digital Globe's Quickbird satellite.

Subscribers to the company's line of weather forecast products can use the forum to discuss the products and asks questions of the weather scientists.

    If one is interested in a global viewer with additional scientific value, the Global Land Cover Facility has the Earth Science Data Interface that allows one to browse Earth's surface from the perspective of many different satellites. It has imagery from the Landsats, Terra, Aqua and the Space Shuttle. For a true-color global satellite imagery set, check out the GeoCover NaturalVue at Earth Satellite Corproation.

    Dr. Sheffield continued to work with Earth Satellite Corporation after he turned 40 and his mathematical work was the basis for a lot of Earthsat's early success. He's definitely made a mark in the geology/remote sensing community. Mr. Doug Hall, CEO of Earthsat, sent out a very moving e-mail addressing the man's achievements, which I don't think would be appropriate to post here. Maybe Chris Peterson, of Earthsat, is a slashdotter and could comment further. In answer to the troll above, don't bother. You're obviously far too dumb to know much about geology or the widely varied disciplines Dr. Charles Sheffield worked in. Reminds me of my own field of study, Materials Science. You've probably never heard of that either.
