Google Releases Maps API for External Use

bahree writes "Google now has officially released their API's for Google Maps; till now there were a few hacks in place such as my where I work, but now its all supported. You would need to get a key, which is associated with a specific url, you can get that here and also read up on all the fun details here." CT: Sorry for the dupe.       The Chicago Crime Map and HousingMaps are excellent ideas. Hopefully we'll see larger scale versions of these services that cover the entire US.

      The Chicago crime map is especially cool. Thanks for passing the info along.

      It's interesting to see how some crimes are localized (like narcotics) and others are randomly dispersed (motor vehicle theft). I'm sure that enforcement methods for narcotics is partially to blame, but it's interesting nonetheless.

      I personnally like http://www.cytadia.com/ a free real estate community website where you can post your house for sale and let buyers search for it using an interface based on Google Maps.

      I created a map hack for all recent recorded Nevada and Eastern California earthquakes a couple weeks ago. A few days ago, the hack stopped working. I noticed Google changed their code and many of the map hack sites stopped working. "Oh well, maybe I'll fix it later."

      But with today's announcement, I grabbed a key, read the documentation, and had the site back up (and with a few new features) within about an hour. Their API documentation is VERY good.

      While not as "cool looking" as a Google Map, the USGS has a very nice recent earthquake map that is clickable, down to coordinates & fault name.

      Yes, I visit that site often, but I made my site because 1) the USGS doesn't list earthquakes under 1.0 magnitude (with good reason though, it's nearly impossible to verify those events), and 2) because I could :)

      It's not totally a dupe, it was in fact "launched" at the O'Reilly Where 2.0 conference today.

      Receiving no attention is the news that Yahoo also released their maps API today as well. You can read a ranty blogpost from a Yahoo developer about the differences.

      Why is everyone on /. so concerned about dupes and making everyone aware that one's been made. If you've seen a story before feel free to not read (or post to) it again. Admittedly it does show some slackness on the part of the editors that they don't even keep up to date with what has already been reported on their own site.     Wow, these guys at Google are good, I mean real good. For them to release not just one, but two APIs for Google maps within 24hrs of each other, that place must be swelling with brain-power. They probably don't even have to walk from point A to B, just levitate themselves using their psychokinetic abilities. Flying around the room back and forth as they communicate faster than thought with each other non-verbally that to us mortals, sounds just like a high pitched squeel.

    Now only if Slashdot editors had a just fraction of those kind of mental resources, they could maybe... possibly... bang a keyboard with their clubs made human bones while in a circle of gigantic monoliths and type "Google Maps API" in a search before posting a story.     Google retains the right to put advertising on the map in the future.

    That is intersting. Perhaps they will add advertising for cerain locations. They might add a starbucks logo over each of their coffee shops on the map. It would be a good way to pay for it and thus keep it free for developers.

      Chances are good it won't just be "Let's put coffe shops all over" but instead will be tragetted google ads base don your website content.

      Have a website featuring bike trails? You'll have bike ads on the map - some may point to locations of bike shops, others to ice cream shops (biking and ice cream go hand in hand, for those who don't know)

      A key to Google's strategy is to maximize advertising effectiveness by targetting the ads. This is one side effect to organizing the world's information - a powerful ability to discern user preferences by the page content and choosing ads wisely, while not getting in the way of the user.

      In Raleigh, NC that would essentially blot out the map at anything but the largest distance, least magnification view. Add McDonald's and so forth and you can forget a map of Manhattan. Floating logos are not a good idea.

    There was this thing where this one group was doing something very specific that made their use of google maps not okay to the point where google sent a takedown notice or something. It was never made clear to me what the problem with what they did was.

    What exactly do I have to do to make sure my use of google maps is OK?

    For anyone who's interested, I've started a way of using the XML import features of the API to use the KML file that Google Earth exports. You have to unzip the KMZ file and use the 'doc.kml' file within it.

    This lets you display the placemarkers saved in Google Earth on a flat Google Map. Descriptions & icons aren't in there yet... but you can see the results so far at http://twig.homelinux.org/gmap.html.

    (It's broken in IE for some reason. FF works.)

      I spent most of last night playing with Google Earth
      and let me say its simply the best application I've ever seen, its fun, useful, enabling and it works just how it should.

      One problem, I need it for my Linux work machine not the Windows box, but afaik no Linux/Source available yet :(

    this is cool since now the forum I am a part of can finally have a 'forum map' (for vbulletin just added 2 profile for lat/long). it should be up and running in a bit as it's kind of a no brainer.. only complaint would be that there could be an easier way to get lat/long by user input (maybe I skipped it on the API page?). meh.

      Hmmm ...maybe a map of all escorts in the city. That looks doable, combine google maps with escort directory. Moreover it will be a more realistic option for most slashdoters ;)

    I noticed the maps API does not allow you to switch to a satellite view like their web counter-part. If they added that, the cool factor on this thing would double.

    Overlaying polygons and lines is a neat feature though. No need for using flickr to mark out areas on static maps when you can do so on dynamic maps right through the google API.

    That's what google does so well; build the foundation, open up the API and let the developers build on top of that foundation. Some really cool things will come out in the upcoming weeks.

    There are a number of fantastic google maps hacks site popping up.

    You might want to check out placeshare.org to see a simple site that does flikr style tagging with user managed locations.

    There are a couple other sites that are moving in the same direction... there were some excellent demo's at the where2.0 conference yesterday.

      Site has some very real potential but the implementation still needs some work. The main thing I would use this site for is to put multiple tags on the same map and while it looks like they are trying to implement this fuctionality, it dosen't appear to be in working order yet.     Slashdot has *long* since stopped caring about quality. It's all about pageviews and clickthroughs. They know that even if they post 5 of the same stories in a row, that they'll get the same amount of traffic (maybe more?). If you see a crappy article or a dupe, the BEST way that you can send a message to the editors that you want quality is to spend time NOT viewing Slashdot for that day/week/whatever. Don't browser, don't post. THEN, maybe they'll realize that they can't just rest on momentum forever.

      I'm sure they keep track of popularity of stories. Using the RSS feed to go to stories of interest will eventually give them an idea of what stories people will read / visit, and which they won't.

      Or, someone could make an RSS feed that posts direct links from slashdot, so that we don't have to visit this place at all. Then again, the editors might not like that :)

    I suppose the question is, do they consider each tile you load from their map server a page view? If they do, it wouldn't take many users scrolling around on the maps to get their.

    "A "page view" is the number of times users download the JavaScript, not the number of map tiles, so it is a fairly high limit for most sites. Also, we are not restricting use of the API to small sites -- we are just asking that sites who have more page views than 50K contact us first to ask permission so we can make sure we can handle the load.

      Since they coded it to one browser at a time, I don't think they're following any standards. My browser (konqueror) is pretty standards compliant, almost certainly more so than a few of the supported browsers (Safari and of course IE). I think it's them not bothering to write standards compliant code, not the browsers.

      Not all browsers support all features needed, but if you look at the documentation for the Google Maps API, you'll see that they go to quite some effort to replacing missing fucntionality. For example they provide a Java script XML parser as a fallback if the browser doesn't have it's own. Ditto XSLT. They aso hide the difference between IE and every-other-browsr XmlHttpRequest.

    I see in their disclaimers that "Google retains the right to put advertising on the map in the future.". I can't help but wonder if this is a sign of things to come. They'll let everyone and anyone use their maps, spread them around the web, maybe until Google maps are the only maps to use, and then WHAM! Adverts appear on Google maps everywhere.

    OK, it's a tin-foil hat theory but I can see it happening...

    So I went camping on the Oregon Coast a few weeks ago, and had a hell of a time finding the right campground.
    While out there I had an idea to make my own 'google map hack' for showing campgrounds around the state (there were absolutly no drugs -- mushrooms -- involved in coming up with this idea, I swear ;))

    So when I got home, I emailed oregonstateparks and got the info I needed to map out the campgrounds and stateparks all over the state. I want to eventually do this nationwide but haven't had time to work on it.

    I used to have a "maps application" look to it, but since the official API came out, I just updated it so it actually worked again. Currently, I'm only showing a random 20 parks out of the 400 or so in the database.

    I'd like to separate them out by region (north coast, portland metro, etc...) and also maybe map hiking trails via the polyline object.

      Wow! I wouldn't mind helping. I was looking for a campground in Northern California last fall and had a very difficult time finding a decent one. I ended up blindly picking a campground and luckily it turned out to be incredible! It was my wife's first time camping and now her camping standards are way too high because of that experience.

      Wow, cool. I'm always wishing I had a convenient resource to tell where the parks are (campground or not). My interest is primarily in extracting information for select personal uses. But something that often occurs to me is that map data would be very effective in showing people just how much of their world, physically in this case, is tied up by government. I mean, if you could see how much real estate is claimed, that would be something. (IANAL -- I Am Not A Libertarian)

      From the discussions in the /. post "First Google Maps Hack Takedown" ( http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/06/08/203208 ) it seems pretty clear why Google shut down just that site. While their service was cool, they were doing a extensive dump of lots of image data for users and then reselling that data. Since the image data doesn't even belong to Google, I'd assume they'd be violating their agreements with the providers if they let that site stay up. I think they'll stay supportive of almost all of these projects.

    A slight problem with your theory. While the continents change shape on a geological timescale. The web chages a wee bit faster than that. I can't imagine ever knowing where everything is. And even if you did have a comprehensive index of everything, the index would still need to be searched. Or were you going to print it out in alphabetical order and then flip pages to find the website you want to visit?

    It's interesting to note the the "Google Maps API" contains some goodies that make it into a nice cross platform AJAX toolkit as well as a maps API.

    Take a look at the GXmlHttp, GXml and GXslt classes:

    Yeah, I've always thought that it must be pretty difficult to combine multiple submissions about the same story into one, which does happen from time to time. It seems that the editors are quite good at peeking at the submission queue, but not at knowing what the previously approved submissions were (which would be easier in my opinion).

    So far people have posted their sample Google Map mashups there along with some code samples. Most of this was done before the Google Maps API was released, so some of the sites may not work due to the new javascript file version.

    Also, make sure to check out the Google-Maps-API and Google-Maps Google Groups. The Google-Maps-API group is particularly active and there ahve been over 100 posts just today.

    Such a filter is very useful to weed out dup's like this one, which include the same URL in the summary. And which are both in the same category. Which accounts for the majority of dup's. Since there are only a few dup's per week, most weeks would go by without a dup. Since most dup's only waste a minute or so to realize, the actual damage of the problem will become one of minutes a month. That kind of productivity is worth getting, no matter what the FAQ says. The lack of a fix is the reason that Question is still Frequently Asked.

    I note that even dup's making it through the filter should, once known by the editor, have their discussions combined. The real problem with dup's is splitting the discussions. And revealing that the editors don't actually read Slashdot.
